A little OV history occured yesterday... Happy Birthday Optimus V

Yesterday marked the one year anniversary of the OV.
I beleive tomorrow may mark the first day we got root, but I'm not sure on that and looking it up is difficult.

Technically the OV didn't go on sale until Feb. first, some managed to get it one year ago yesterday. In two days, my phone will be one year old. I had to call several stores and deal with some terrible store managers/employees to get it and still took almost an hour in the store itself. My OV is a tired old thing but it keeps on going.

Two weeks from today Mmmark111 released Rodimus Rom, the first rom we got. Five days later the grandaddy of roms Stock + Xionia was released by Revolution Red. I call it the grandaddy because almost all Froyo roms eventually used a bit of Revolution Red's rom. Aphrodite (the foundation for Harmonia) was a continuation of Rev's work (with his consent), was built 10 months ago, almost to the day. Today, Harmonia 1x still retains files from that rom, some of which were borrowed from the Optimus S.

For a cheap phone on a cheap plan, we have had some great developers pass through and get us to where we are. You may see me as one of the older devs, but to me, those guys were the pioneers.

Was it really that hard to find? I suppose I didn't try to grab it on launch day, hell, I didn't even know anything about it besides "prepaid Android on Virgin mobile $25 / month", and easily walked in to my Best Buy. Bought the Intercept first, returned it quickly for the OV. Granted, I have lots of problems with it now and think I just need a device that's a bit more powerful for my taste, but it is really the perfect first Android phone and I will always recommend it as long as it's for sale.

Re: A little OV history occured yesterday... Happy Birthday Optim

I also purchased mine the weekend prior to the tuesday release (Store manager had to call her supervisor to make sure she could sell it) and have used it constantly since. I do remember that for several weeks (months ?) afterwards, none of the stores around where I live could keep it in stock.
Being my first smartphone, I have really enjoyed it, but I am ready to upgrade to something else.
(If Virgin Mobile ever decides to release a new model or two)

Re: A little OV history occured yesterday... Happy Birthday Optim

Quick question:

For my phone's birthday, I made it a cake and because I couldn't find my phone's mouth, I ended up taking the back cover off and just smearing it in frosting and mushing some cake all it. Now the phone appears to be bricked. It won't boot up at all and feels really sticky.

Anyone have any ideas on how to fix it?

Re: A little OV history occured yesterday... Happy Birthday Optim

i had mine for about as long. its not in my possession anymore but its getting a heck of a lot of use by my friend! probably will for the next year too.

lets hope my triumph lasts as long :P (hahaha i doubt it but who knows)

ROM Manager will fix it in an instant! :p

Launch day was not until Feb first, but some of us tried to get them ahead of time.

Stores didn't have them on shelves yet and store managers and employees were concerned that they would get into trouble if they sold it out of the back room (you had to know the product code). When they finally did go on sale on the first, most stores had been cleaned out or were cleaned out by lunch. It was weeks before there was enough stock available that you could regularly find them on store shelves.

Unbelievable to think that I picked up my Optimus V a year ago.

In eight days, it will have been a year since getitnowmarketing released the first custom recovery ported to this phone. It was based off of the files I pulled for it.. I played the role as beta tester. I remember when mmmark111 and RevolutionRed came on the scene. Root then involved temp rooting with superoneclick and some ADB magic to get it to stick... How easy they have it today.... lol.

Edit: I believe that we did gain root a year ago tomorrow. Ziplips over on SDX discovered the original permanent root solution for the V.

My original V is taking it easy on stock with my brother. My dads V is living life on IHO. The community for this phone is every bit as good as it is for the expensive and popular phones... The community for the V spoiled me. I was a flashaholic for a while.

That is the biggest reason I am having second thoughts about going to another phone. But With things expanding for me I need better coverage. Nothing worse then to be out and have a customer leave a voicemail or even worse NOT leave a voicemail and be upset because they couldnt get ahold of you for some reason. In this new era of instant communications people are becoming more impatient than ever before.

Re: A little OV history occured yesterday... Happy Birthday Optim

There are other phones with good developer communities, they just aren't supported by VM.

While not huge, I'm convinced we probably have the best dev support for any Virgin Phone. I know we lost some good devs to the Triumph but I just don't see the support behind it, too many disgruntled users. The Intercept had lots of people and stuff, but that is a matter of age. I don't think that phone inspired people really. Not like the OV has done. The 8530 had/has lots of support but mostly because it applied to so many carriers. Virgin specific support isn't anything worthy of mention.

Unfortunately, I'm not sure how much longer mine will last, the SD port is failing more and more often. Not a shock considering the number of time I have used it. With luck, in a week or so my OV will become a backup/dev phone and that is all.

I had to go to 4 Radio Shacks to find it, but I got mine that first day. They had them hidden in the back at the first store, found out when the guy at the 4th checked his computer. Either way, despite the effort it was worth it. The $40 plan is still a steal, and this phone (with the right custom rom... ahem Harmonia2) is still a killer piece of hardware.

Thanks, now my phones pi**ed at me for forgetting our anniversary.

I'll feed her another custom ROM, and she'll get over it (she has quite an appetite :-!

By the time I purchased mine, mmarz had ROM Tools setup so it was fast and easy to root. Within a day or two of purchase, I had aospbot's CM running on it. There have been a lot of great people contribute to this community, thanks to all of you! ;)

If you wanted to stay with the V, Best Buy has them on sale for $99.

My OV still works, it's just starting to show it's age and I wanted something better/newer. I got tired of waiting on Virgin (Triumph? No thanks).

The V will be sticking around though, as will Harmonia updates. It's just going into semi-retirement. Trust me, it deserves it.

My phone is probably the single most flashed OV there is.
I made 3 variations of Aphrodite, and 2 of Harmonia, plus the updates, betas and options. I have tried just about every OV and OS rom. I also worked on porting some OS roms to OV and then ported Harmonia 1 to the S (never went past test phase), I also did the OS to OV kernel conversion info which meant flashing even more. It's outlived one Sdcard, working on three more (I cycle several small ones), been soft bricked 3 or 4 times, boot looped who knows how many times. It's normal of for me to flash five to 15 times in a single day while experimenting, testing or building, sometimes more. Harmonia 2.0B and 1.5 took nearly 50 flashes each to get right, 1.3 took even more (I never claimed to be a good or fast dev, just persistent :p). Once rooted, I think the single longest ever I went without flashing was a week and a half, and only once.

If it ever does die, I think it deserves a 21 gun salute for the sacrifices made.

Good ness. And I thought I flashed mine a lot... lol. My brother did ask what was wrong with my battery when he got it... I asked him if he knew how many different software flashes my phone had gone through. His old Rumor Touch battery lasts him about as long as the V's battery.

I'm not leaving, just putting my OV into semi-retirement.
