a possible gotcha

Hello Everybody,

Verizon Wireless gives a $5.00 discount on your monthly subscription if you agree to:

1) Paperless Billing -- you receive invoices digitally, but nothing on paper in the US mail

2) Auto-Pay -- your monthly fee is deducted automatically from a payment card which you provide.

When completing your online order or when collecting your new phone in the Verizon store, you can opt for the first of these two: Paperless Billing.

You cannot, however, enroll in Auto-Pay until after your Verizon account is activated.

Here's the gotcha:

Verizon never prompts you to complete this two-step process. Verizon lays low. Verizon earns passive income. You may notice this matter when you get your first digital invoice. But if you don't, and if you fail to manually enroll in autopay, you'll be forfeiting the discount.

So be proactive. Make a note to yourself, and enroll asap after your service is activated.

How is this a "gotcha"? Verizon is very upfront about pricing that is displayed includes enrollment in Auto Pay. Wouldn't it be more of a gotcha if they forced Auto Pay onto whatever card you provided to them? What if that was one you didn't want to use for that? To me that would be way worse.

I definitely don't see it as a gotcha. Every other carrier also does this as well. The customer must enroll in it.

The account as a whole -- not each line.

You misunderstood my question. I am not talking about per line. I am talking about per account. It's $5.00 off for autopay and $5.00 off for paperless billing which makes it $10.00 total. This was how they explained it to me a few months ago with online chat.

The thing was I had the Nationwide 550 Voice, no text + Grandfathered unlimited from 2009 on two lines. I'm paying close to $150 a month. I was asking about the New Verizon plan back in June and basically was told by chat and phone that it was $15 cheaper than my current bill with both autopay and paperless billing. If I wanted autopay or paperless billing only, then it would be $10 cheaper than my current bill and I needed to do both to get the $15 cheaper from my current bill since each option was worth a $5 discount. But doesn't matter now, since I'm already on XFinity at $55.42 for two lines with unlimited voice, text and unlimited data on the only phone that needs data which is $45 for line 1 + $5.21 taxes + fees and for line 2 just the $5.21 taxes + fees.

No it's 5 dollars for a single line. 10 dollars for family.

The discount isn't separate for paperless billing and auto pay. You must have both active.. then you get 5 bucks off your total bill for single line or 10 bucks for 2 +.

Actually I have only a family plan so there is no single line. There was mention of a $10 autopay discount when you search on Google but I think it does not allow credit cards and only allows Checking or Debit Cards. It's hard to tell since basically they were telling me how much the price difference is between what I had as Nationwide 550 Family Loyalty Plan with 2 lines, only 1 line had the 2009 Grandfathered Unlimited Data Plan, there is no data on line 2 which is voice only.

Well then yes 10 dollars for you since family plan. Single line is 5. It means enrollment in paperless billing and auto pay.

The thing was I was trying to get a paper bill and they basically said if I wanted a paper bill, the discount would be $5 less so $5 instead of $10 if I had both paperless billing and autopay.

In my case, since it was still June 2017 when I contacted them, it's actually referring to the unlimited plans they introduced in February 2017 as the Go and Beyond did not exist until late August 2017.

In February it was only $5 single line and $10 family. Such as of right now I am on the Feb. Unlimited plan and only have a $10 discount with my 9 lines for having Auto Pay and Paperless.

Interesting. Maybe they were giving me the wrong info since basically they were comparing my current price vs switching to the new plan and said it's $5 for autopay only without paperless or $10 with both autopay and paperless. So basically it was bringing my $150 bill down to around $130-$135 for 2 lines, one with unlimited data and one just voice only. I ended up switching to XFinity Mobile instead I was getting the same thing for $55.42 a month with the $5.21 taxes/fees per line totalling $10.42 a month which is cheaper than the nearly $16 a month in taxes/fees I was paying but regardless, I'm saving $94.58 a month.
