A question and observation

First the question, I have searched and did not find anyone else asking this so I hope I am not cluttering up the forum for something already discussed.

There is a setting in the phone to silence the ringer when you pick up the phone, I assume using the gyro inside.

I like this idea because where I work the cell signal is weak so when my phone rings I pick it up and carry it outside to answer it. With past (non smart phone) phones I could hit an external button and the ringer would silence til I opened the phone to answer.

This, ringer silencer feature, is not working that I can tell on my phone. Anyone else have this issue? Any fixes, or things to try?

Second an observation, it seems odd this phone only has 2 orientations. My ipod touch will rotate the screen whichever way you hold it. I noticed this as I downloaded an app to have a bright clock on the entire screen when the phone is plugged in to AC power to use it as a bedside clock. But it only works on the side the charger plugs into. So the Phone can't sit on its side and have the charger plugged in for this App to work correctly. If the orientation would rotate completely over I could set the phone down leaning against a lamp or something with the charger cord coming out the top, but it won't orient that way.

While the phone is ringing, you can silence it by placing it face down. As to the directionality of the phone, yes, it has upright and on it's side to the left. I like it this way, because I don't have to worry about it flipping the screen constantly if I'm laying in bed or it's upsidedown in my purse.

In Settings>Sound & display make sure the "Quiet ring on Pickup" box is checked. If it's not working automatically, the volume down button is mighty handy.

Quiet ring on pickup is enabled. That was the first indication I had that this phone would even do that. So it is checked, but still not working. That was one of the first things I selected when setting up the phone. Thought it was a really cool feature, kind of bummed it doesn't work.

The setting the phone face down only works when its against something, like a table, it doesnt silence the phone when your carrying it amd hold it face down.

Quiet ring on pick up only makes the ring get quieter, it does not silence it. If the phone is sitting face up and you turn it over on to its screen while it's ringing, that will turn the ringer off (but will not send it to voicemail). So if you wanted the ringer to turn off, just flip the phone over and then pick it up. Both of these features work as I have tested both of them on my own. Maybe something they ought to do is give you the extra option (ie: when the phone is picked up, do you want to make it quieter, silence it, or neither).
