AA/Google map disconnects when shut off car

Vehicle: 2016 Chevrolet
Phone: Nexus 6 (stock ROM, not rooted), September security update.

Background: AA always connects to car and is recognized without issues.

Issue: While traveling, using Google Maps (Android Auto), when I make a stop and shut off the car, I leave the navigation active, on the car's touch screen.
When I restart the car (generally after 10 minutes, so "retained accessory power" has shut down), I find that my car doesn't "see" AA anymore but my phone is still in AA mode. So I have to unplug my phone, at which point Google Maps is no longer showing my navigation route. Restart my route in Google Maps, plug my phone back in to car's USB and it reconnects AA and works OK again.

Is this normal behavior? I would have expected everything to fire right back up where I left off.

Thanks, in advance for any feedback.

Just did a test today at lunchtime. I set AA and GM to navigate to my home. But along the way I stopped at a 7-11. I turned off the car and left the phone connected. When I returned to my car I started it up and AA connected. I was on the main screen (the one you get when you hit the O button) but the top part, the green part, had directions. I can tap that and get right back to the full screen Google Maps navigating my route home.

Is this not what you experience? How is it different.

When I return to car I see the dreaded "Projection" icon. I tap it and it tells me to connect my phone (which is already connected, of course). The phone has the AA screen on it, indicating that it still thinks it's connected to the car. At this point, I unplug the phone, and open Google Maps which is no longer showing my route. So, I start the route again and connect to the car and all is good. Every time. Phone never fails to connect and AA works every time. Just doesn't quite feel right that AA and GM have to be restarted when I come back to the car.

BTW: thanks a lot for your feedback. I appreciate you running the experiment. If I may ask, what car do you have?
