My epic attempted the update and now it is cycling through sprint 4g screen and galaxy s screens customer service didnt know what to do i tried the manual update and it keeps failing the verification. does anyone one know what i am doing wrong I dont want to lose the apps i didnt back up i was not aware of the update prior to the phone performing it. i thought it was a normal system update i know that a few others have had the same problem and they performed a soft reboot and it worked and one had to restore to factory settings can someone help me with this

Let me ask, were you rooted prior to attempting this update? If so that is your problem. You need to return to stock Froyo EC05 to do the manual update.

SMWolfe, I was in same situation as you. I forgot to unroot my stock setup before updating and was stuck in reboot cycle. Get back to power on menu and pick revert to stock/wipe option and the phone should boot into ginger bread after that. Of course all your stuff will be gone but at least gingerbread will be there.

I was on stock unrooted Froyo and still got stuck in a reboot cycle when manually updating to Gingerbread. But yeah, I've always read that if you're rooted, you need to get back to stock unrooted in order to get an OTA push or do a manual install of the official update.zip.

Regarding rooting stock EI22, it looks relatively straightforward from what I've read. Has anyone had any problems with it? I've never rooted before, and while I know there's always some degree of risk with this, I'm wondering what are my chances of having trouble. My phone's warranty is up soon/now anyway and I doubt we'll see ICS officially, so rooting seems like a good idea. Also, is there a way to get back to stock Gingerbread EI22 without having to go back to Froyo first, then updating to Gingerbread? I don't think I've read anything about that yet. Thanks.

Rooting isn't too bad... I have never really heard of a TRUE brick on the Epic when rooting even if something did go wrong.. You just start over and try again or worst case you use Odin to restore the phone back to stock.

As far as an easy method to restore to factory GB, we will only have that method available via Odin if Samsung or Sprint decides to release the official "tar" file which they probably will at some point.

Otherwise until that happens you have to Odin to official Froyo then update to GB using OTA or manual.

My wife's S2 and my son's Echo both have this ECO mode widget and both run gingerbread. Is that hidden somewhere on our phones too?

Thanks, that's good to know. I think I've read the same, which gives me a bit more confidence that I can do this without encountering unrecoverable problems. People here seem to be able to help in the case of trouble, and that's good for someone new to rooting like me. I suppose that until a way to Odin directly to EI22 comes around, I could always use the existing methods to get back to Froyo then update to Gingerbread with the update.zip like I did last week. As long as I can get back to stock somehow, it's OK. There's some more I'd like to know, but I've got to go for now. I'll look into them later on and ask questions then if I can't find answers or need some clarification.

I didnt root my epic. i didnt make any changes to any system that i wasnt sure i couldnt undo or fix. everything was stock. i chatted with sprint again and they were totally clueless. they kept telling to go to menu settings etc even after i told them numerous things that i couldnt load past those two screens. so then i called and twice they transfered my calls once to another consumer and then hung up on me.
so im done tring to get thier help. so if you had any ideas i would be thankful

Have you re dowloaded the manual update file? Could have a bad download...

Make sure your doing it with a computer if possible... Using your phone for such bigger downloads sometimes end up with corruption...

I redownloaded twice more and still couldnt verify I dont know if there is another or different copy and i did use my pc to download the update to the sd and placed it in my phone i then pressed the vol down camera and power buttons and loaded from sd I dont have ACS will that have any effect and i dont know if i missed doing something

Your going to need to Odin back to stock Froyo EC05. Being on DK28 Froyo and an older CWM your better off doing as I recommend. You can still make your backups with Titanium or MyBackup Root and do a Data Only restore once your on GB and rooted again.

I just basically encountered the same problem. I used odin to upgrade to EB13 which is the first release of Froyo. You will get an OTA update to install to EC05 which was the last release of Froyo for the Epic. From there you should recieve the OTA to go to EI22 or OFFICIAL release of gingerbread. Just look around for the tar for EB13. Paul627g shoud have the link somewhere.

If you are noob at flashing dont sweat it and just look up qbking77 on youtube for step by step video help.
