Active?

I was wondering if someone could answer this question for me that I am curious about.

In the battery stats what is the 5 hours 28 minutes active in relation to. It's obviously not the screen on time so what does it represent?

Active is just that - the total time the device was actively running processes, whether while you were using it - which is basically screen time - or while in your pocket or sitting on the charger at night, checking email, syncing your Google account, whatever.
