I'm new to the Android world... Got my Nexus S 4G on Monday the 9th and it's great so far. I have done a lot of searching on the web (including this forum) but I can't seem to find an answer to my question.

I want to load custom ringtones to my phone. I have connected my phone to my PC and I can see the folders. I don't have a folder named SD Card or memory card but there is nothing there. I tried creating a folder called 'ringtones' in the root folder and put them in there but it doesn't work. I also created a 'ringtones' folder in \media\audio directory and that doesn't work either.

Any suggestions? Am I missing something so obvious here?

Thanks for any help that is provided!!

Sure thing. I've added a notification sound instead of a ringtone (I wanted the official google talk alert), but it should be the same except replace "notifications" with "ringtones".

/sdcard/media/audio/notifications

Did you have to create the folders? I have no media folder on my sd card.

try the Zedge app. Works great and has alot of different wallpapers, ringtones and notifications to download. All for free.

I didn't have to create the "notifications" folder. It was already there with the "facebook_ringtone_pop.mp3" file inside. The "ringtones" folder though, I believe you have to create yourself.

Thanks for your direction. Created the folders, placed my song in it, and viola, my favorite phone ringtone is now available.

You are the man.

Android by default looks for ringtones on very specific directories, so the easiest solution for me was to relocate all my added tones to these special folders and be able to select whatever I wanted from any system or program menu.

The directory tree goes like this:

sdcard > media > audio

Inside the audio folder, you can have an alarms folder, a notifications folder (for SMS/email) and ringtones folder (phone).

Here is how you can do it:

1. If you don't have one, get a file manager utility from the Market - I use Astro. You can also do this by connecting your Evo the computer via USB cable, selecting the Evo as mass storage and using your desktop file manager to make all this changes.

2. On the SD card root directory, create a folder named media, inside it create another folder named audio.

3. Inside the audio folder, create three additional folders named alarms, notifications and ringtones.

4. Move all your custom phone ringtone to the media/audio/ringtones folder.

5. Move all your custom SMS and email sounds to the media/audio/notifications folder.

6. Move all your custom alarm sounds to the media/audio/alarms folder.

Once done, you should see all your custom sounds listed along side the systems' on the settings menu of the phone and also on any other program that allows custom sound selection. This should make things easier.

Remember to relocate any new sounds you get in the future to the appropriate folder.

I made a bunch of ringtones and have carried them with me via Ringtone folder.

Just plub in phone, open Windows/phone as drive which will show directory of folders. Then drag and drop or just copy.

When editing contacts to add specific ringtones (I have different ones for different people), they are in the mix of standard ringtones.

Very easy, the above will also work, but this might be easier for some if not familiar with making/moving files.
