Adding and using a ringtone - How do I do it?

On my Note 5, in the download folder, I have an .mp3 ringtone.
I've tried countless ways, to copy the file to the 'Ringtone' folder. As a matter of fact, I even used Solid Explorer.

Finally, I tried the default File Explorer app on the device, and was able to copy the file to the 'Ringtone' folder.
Now, I can't add the file\select the file as the default ringtone.

Ugh, surely it can't be this difficult, right?

Did you restart your device?

If all else fails, use ringdroid and make it a ringtone again and as soon as you save it, it will give you the option to make default ringtone. It may be that it needs to be saved in the right format

My ringtones are saved as a .m4a file. I don't know if that matters, but it might

Also, my ringtones are stored in this location. There is another folder named ringtones in the root directory too, so don't know if that makes a difference too.

I just copied the ringtone to the location listed, here. Yet, I still can't add it as the default ringtone. I'll look into recreating the ringtone. Albeit, it shouldn't be this difficult. Thanks for the tips thus far...

On my Verizon Notes 5 I simply copied the ringtone to the Internal Storage>Ringtones folder using Solid Explorer, shut down the phone and rebooted. When I then went to Settings>Sound and Notifications>Ringtones and Sounds>Ringtone the copied ringtone file showed up in alphabetic order with the pre-installed ringtones.
Curiously, the pre-installed ringtones are not stored in the above-identified location.

I have a Ringtones folder and any ringtone that I have copied into that folder have thus far showed up in my list of available ringtones. My ringtones are .mp3

I tried beh's steps and that didn't work. Really, really weird. And my ringtone is a .mp3.

You may wish to try going to the Settings>Sound and Notifications>Ringtones and Sounds>Ringtone file and scroll down to the bottom of the list of ringtones and click on the [+ Add Ringtone] then pick a music player or file manager from the pop-up list and you should be able to see or find your ringtone file. Click on the ringtone file and it should be added to the list of available ringtones.

You may wish to try going to the Settings>Sound and Notifications>Ringtones and Sounds>Ringtone file and scroll down to the bottom of the list of ringtones and click on the [+ Add Ringtone] then pick a music player or file manager from the pop-up list and you should be able to see or find your ringtone file. Click on the ringtone file and it should be added to the list of available ringtones.

I'd don't this earlier, to no avail. Just tried it again, but clearing the default apps first. This time during the process of choosing the ringtone, I used Media as default, versus Solid Explorer. Same thing. I see the ringtone, click on it, and the screen flashes back to the list Ringtones and Sounds. Yep, my choice isn't selected. Really weird.

Thanks for the tips and ideas thus far.

Ps: I can play to ringtone (last 10 seconds), and this tone works fine on my BlackBerry Priv.

Yes, it is now in the list to select. I select it, then the screen takes me back to the Ringtone and Sounds screen. Where it SHOULD now list my tone of choice for 'calls'...

But is it on the list to allow you to select it. Adding it will not also select it as the active ringtone.

Beyond weird. I rebooted one more time (just for the sake of it). I've tried adding said ringtone one more time, and now it is finally allowing me to select it. Very, very weird.

Try the app zedge. You can't download just about any popular song and after it downloads you can set as ringtone. Also has HD wallpapers and games you can download as well
