Adding Email to Gmail app won't proceed past Checking Info

I have a Nexus 7 running Android 6.0.1.

I've previously added some Gmail email accounts to the Gmail app (the last one I added was around 2 years ago). I can send & receive emails from those email accounts without any problem.

Today, however, I have a problem when try to add another gmail email account.

When I click "Add Account" in the Gmail app, I'm taken to this screen:


When I click Google, it's goes here:


Then after about 2 secs I'm returned to the previous screen and that's as far as I can get.

(If I choose something like Outlook or Yahoo, there is no problem and I'm taken to the next screen to where I'd input the relevant details).

Does anyone know what can the problem be or how to resolve not being able to get past Checking Info screen?

I've recently disabled some Google apps, but I'm sure none are related to Gmail app (Cloud Print, Docs, Google's Play Books/Play Games/Play Movies & TV/Play Music/Play Newsstand, Google+/Hangouts/Keep/Sheets/Slides).

The problem must be related to the Nexus 7 as there is no problem when adding an Gmail email address on a Samsung android phone I have.

Add the new account to Settings/Accounts, then run GMail and add an account.

That doesn't work as I still can't get past that checking info screen.
