after 911 call severe battery drain

Aloha,

Using the normal S5 phone keypad (not "emergency call") I made a 911 call. A dialog box popped up with options...one was something about callback mode; I do not recall the other, which is the choice I made at the time.

Sometime after making the call, I noticed the phone was unusually warm, and about three hours later discovered the battery at 3%. I immediately switched to ultra power saver mode and plugged in to the desktop for charging. After a couple hours, the battery was still only at about 25%. When I got home around 6 PM. I again started charging and left it on overnight. I was shocked in the AM to find it still below 50%. At this point, I powered down/up and continued to charge. After about 3 more hours, it was 100%.

It has been several days now, and it has been working normally (not power saver mode), usually dropping to around 65% by the time I get home from work, and easily charging overnight to 100% again.

Does anyone know what those 911 options are, and more about them? Any other explanations, especially as to why it did not fully charge overnight?

I do not leave location "on" except when I specifically want to use it. Wifi and Bluetooth are always on. Phone is always on (even overnight). There was no phone usage during the time I had it on power saver. It has been working fine since I bought it about a month ago.

Welcome to Android Central! When you got home, did you charge it from a wall outlet or from a computer's USB port? The latter charges much more slowly.

It sounds like some app or service started malfunctioning and working overtime, but it's hard to know which one. A reboot usually corrects this kind of behavior. The next time you call 911 (which hopefully is never), I'd either watch for that behavior again, or just reboot after the call to prevent it from happening.

Aloha,

Great forum!

I always charge from a usb port at home, leaving the phone "on", and it has always charged 100% overnight (about six hours) except this one time.

I believe 911 can ping your location which.. Could have bugged the phone and caused it to stay on which caused the drain and the slow charge.

I would try a reboot to see if it knocks that service off. Reboot then charge and check it within 30 minutes to see how much it's charged up.

In Florida if you call 911 from a cell phone it kinds of lock the phone so they will have complete access to it and that is the reason as to why the battery drains faster cause it keeps using the GPS for location. I have spoken with people that called 911 and complained that they could not dial any other number after that so the solution is to turn it off and back on again and it will be ok....

Also, even when you don't use "emergency" mode, the phone will automatically sense that you are calling 911 and switch to that. It boosts the cellular signal so you can make a call, activates the GPS for location, it continuously pings cell towers for enhanced location, and it can even activate wi-fi pinging for location information (while still leaving wi-fi in the off state. It all ensures that you stay connected with the 911 operator (especially in an area with poor reception) and that they are able to accurately track your location. There have been a bunch of times when cellphones were tracked using 911 but they ended up being off by a good 50-100 ft. That's important as it could send the police or medical personnel to the wrong house or wrong apartment complex.

My old flip phone even did this when calling 911 as did my Droid X and iPhone 5. Like others have said though, a simple restart (after you are done talking with them and aren't in an emergency) will snap the phone out of it.
