After Reset SMS don't clear when responding in notification bar

So forever, including after the pie update and ONE ui update, responding to an incoming test in the notification pull down, would send the text, close out the notification on the notification pull down, and Mark it as read. Now when I respond in the notification pull down, it adds my text message under the incoming one I am responding to, and starts a thread on the pull down instead of closing it. Why in the world would we want this and how do I get rid of it?
