After root, can I go back?

So I'm new to rooting. I'm just wondering if it is possible to undo the gingerbreak thing? Like once I do that, I am understanding that I can no longer do factory reset from settings? So how would I do Factory Reset if I want to do so in the future? Can I still go back to a unroot state is what I am asking because I would like to factory reset from the settings in the future, or I would just like to know that there is an option for that since I don't know how to go to safe mode on the optimus V.


Also, what is a emulator? Is it an app from the app store?

Yes you can undo root, though you'll need a bit if experience (or help ) and to factory reset you would have to boot into recovery and wipe data. Simple as that. But do NOT do it from settings, you will brick. And don't use rom manager either

You can do a factory reset from recovery. To get to recovery hold Home + Vol Down + Power button when the phone is off.

Yes you can easily factory reset by installing the ZV9 update. That will wipe everything and you'll start over from factory unrooted.

So I just started rooting a few minutes ago, a menu popped up saying I should have debug on so I installed an app to check mark the debug option, is that what I am suppose to do? or did I mess up?

How long do I have to wait until root is finished?

Also, I think i just finished rooting? My phone restarted and I see a app called "superuser", what do I do with that? Can I now uninstall the useless apps that I never use like twidroid?

I used titanium backup to delete pre installed apps. there's also several lists on the this site a d xda that show what apps/programs are safe to delete. there's other ways but titanium backup is the easiest.
just search titanium backup with root on play store

Thanks! So is there a list of useless apps on the opV? I know that usage is different among people so is there a list describing apps? I've deleted the obvious like twidroid but what about the other ones with weird names?

and as for what's next....... roms,kernals, *root explorer* must have. there's tons to do. I've flashed multiple roms, you can change LCD density (140) looks real good. change boot animation. tether. overclock or underclock your phone( which I'd theprocessor speed) normally its 600 on the ov but roms ( such as backside iho) bump if up to 800 donating.

A ROM is the complete Android operating system, in this case with modifications from the Android system that Vrigin provided. Every rom contains (among other things) a kernel.

The Kernel is the basis of any modern operating system (Windows, Mac OS X, Android, etc). It's essentially the brain of the whole system, and does things like allocating memory, killing apps that are causing problems, and so on. Luckily on the OV, development has progressed to the point where you don't need to worry about flashing a separate kernel; the one that comes with the rom should perform extremely well.

And as noted, the safest and easiest way to unroot is to use the official ZV9 update (it's been removed from Virgin's website for some reason, but it's still floating around here because it's so useful). Just make sure you use a compatible recovery (Bob Zhome recovery is a good one); using one that's incompatible leads to very nasty results because of the way the update works.

Root explorer is an app from the play store. It's $4, but I find it's worth every penny. It's a file manager, but it allows you access the deep internals of Android. It's not a "must-have" app, per se, but it's very useful.

You might as well install a rom. I reccomend Harmonia.

Yes, Froyo, GB, and ICS are roms. The ones that come with the phone are referred to as stock. Custom roms are usually based on them, with the exception of say, Cyanogenmod.

And Sense isn't a kernel. You need to flash a custom kernel to be able to overclock. You can overclock to improve performance, or tweak it to improve battery life. Most custom roms come with a custom kernel already built in, but you can also flash them separately.

Someone said that I should do a clean system restore before I load a rom, how do I do so without losing all my apps and their data?
