Don't know if this makes sense to you all. This is my... Fifth (?) Android device. They all started out awesome. Fast. Who needs apple? Then, seemingly one day, it sucks. Slow. Infuriating. Hmmm, let me look at the new iPhone. What happened? No one seems to know. I'd like to chronicle my life with this nine I just unboxed. Where do I start? Suggestions? Do I start measuring app start up times? Battery life? Any ideas are welcome. Thanks.

As I understand it, there was a huge difference in garbage collection for Android 5 over previous versions. Which should improve it over previous versions. However this is version 5.0 so it has some more updates needed to clear out existing bugs.

Thanks for the feedback folks. Using my Razr maxx thread

http://forums.androidcentral.com/droid-razr-maxx/396619-factory-reset-diary.html

as a base, I'm going to track app responsiveness over time. That link tells me which apps I use most of the time and I'll track how they do over time. If there's interest, I'll publish the sheet, see what folks think.

There's rumors that when I link up my corporate email, something called Mobile Iron gets snuck and that may slow things down a lot. So I'll go through at least two recharges before I add them.

I have been an Apple iphone user for 10 years and figured I would try an Android phone,HTC One M8 back in June of last year.
Big mistake. I though ios was somewhat buggy until I tried Android and it is certainly less secure.

Here's my complaints:
1) Installing some apps led to a flood of junk mail and I mean a flood.
2) For business, ios is much better. Just downloading an PDF requires you to go to downloads on Android.
It instantly open on ios.Too many steps and less productivity on Android.
3) Music sounds better on ios .Better dac and easier to use external dacs
4) Contacts are a mess in Android
5)Way more bugs in Android.
6) Ive had to turn off wifi while away from house because I would not get notifications if it latched on to a wifi site.
7) battery life is actually worse then ios.

The only thing I liked about Android was it had true backgrounding .

I have sold my HTC

Google Play Music sucks big time "all of a sudden" after the last update on 5.0.1 N9. I can't browse related artists, songs, etc while playing music without it restarting on me (play app that is).

I get GC-hell issues as I work with java based soa apps at work, but its annoying when its this bad.

Something weird just happened today. I had updated 14 apps, recorded a couple to measure responsiveness. Noticed the battery was predicting an outage of... Let's say another 12 hours. I put it down, didn't touch for a while. Picked it up to use it about 7 hours before expiry and it was dead. So 5 charging cycles in, it bears watching and I haven't put corporate Mail on it yet.

OK, so I've been tracking basic performance here
https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1-0i9dMyw1aQNDbZ3AUXQ8qgycm2_rTQNcWGHuwpgua8/edit?usp=sharing

So far everything seems snappy, reasonable battery life. I have a bunch of screen shots I took of battery life, if anyone's curious I'll make an effort to post.

While it's charging right now, I'm setting up corporate email. When I did I got warned that they could wipe everything out. Not sure if that's a sign of Mobile Iron getting installed on my device or what. It will be interesting to see what happens now that it will be looking at my corporate email all the time.

One trend is very clear: the 5.1.1 upgrade has significantly increased startup time from cold boot. Two minutes and five seconds this morning. Well over double the time from when I first started using it.

Thanks for the updates :)
5.1.1 definitely helped my N9, but there is still some work to be done before its "perfect"...

After the 5.1.1 update my 9 sucked the big one. All kinds of issues. Still usable but not a pleasant experience. Wiped cache partition multiple times but put off doing a factory reset until yesterday I finally broke down and did it. Hate doing that because it's such a pain to start all over again after you've set the tablet just the way you want it. So...I haven't played with the tablet at all today so I'll see if resetting it over the next few days solved the issues. If not, well I'll just throw it in the junk drawer and try a Samsung tablet.

You are a real apple fan. None of the things you are talking is happening to me in 5 years with nexus galaxy, nexus 5 and 6. Just enjoy Steve Jobs products and be happy.

So I spent the summer basically testing is standby range, about 10 days. Why it takes 2-3 times as long to boot up as my windows 8 laptop... I'd be embarrassed if I was an android engineer. Anyway, I'm going to do a factory reset, see what that does.

Just did a factory reset (although it killed me to do so) and my N9 is working perfectly! So far, no sluggish behavior, no unlock to black screen and I can actually use Chrome browser without it locking up or crashing on me. Keeping fingers crossed that it stays this way.

Yes, those resets are a pain, but like a good strong rain the streets are clean and clear afterward. The boot up time reduced significantly for me afterward, noted in the Sheet I shared out. Without much installed on it, no work email, I was getting about 20 days worth of standy time. But I only got two testing cycles in when it asked for a 5.0 update. THEN it said it was time for a 6.0 update.. Marshmallow? So what the heck, I jumped in and it's in the middle of rebooting as we speak. I'll likely start a new Sheet and track the same things. I do need it for work though, so it may be a while before I get things started with tracking 6.0 performance. Marshmallow...

The problem is, a wipe appears to "fix" everything (sluggishness, frequent reboots that take over two minutes to complete, lock-up's). Within 2-4 weeks, it's all back to some degree and continues to deteriorate. I'm not able to flash marshmallow yet, but I really don't think it will help.
I've done total wipes and individual app re-installs at least 6 times since buying the N9 in January. It never lasts.

Re: "All of a sudden it sucks"

I did mine back in September and I'm still running VERY smoothly. Sorry you haven't had good experiences with system wipes not lasting.

Re: "All of a sudden it sucks"

Another quick update: the post 6.0 charge is winding down, tablet is telling me it'll be dead this saturday morning. I'll probably just let it run out. It has downloaded another update, but this time I'll actually need it for work, test out a side loaded app. I will say this: marshmallow has screwed up the switch out of Airplane mode. In 5.0, it would just switch out back on to the network almost instantly. Maybe a second. After 6.0... 10, 15 seconds, and I'm 3 feet from my router. This is not an app, this is built in functionality, and I've not reinstalled apps on this tablet yet. WTF? Will definitely be watching this after the update. Not a deal killer on the tablet, but my phone? Unacceptable. I use that feature frequently to save battery in low reception areas and it rendered my Android phone unusable for minutes at a time when I did that switch.
