Always On Display Can't Show Notifications Without A Screen Lock?

I noticed that when I turn off the screen lock I lose notifications and the music player controls on the always-on display.

In fact when I turn off swipe from the security settings the menu option for information and facewidgets disappears.

Why does Samsung require the lockscreen to be enabled in order to have those features on the always-on display??

It was that way on my S7Edge. I didn't realize that existed for the first 6 months until I finally put a lock on my phone. On the Note 8 the biometric locks work pretty well. The facial recognition opens the phone fairly easily.

Mine won’t show me the notifications till I unlock it. Not sure what the deal is with that. Just shows an envelope.

This was one of my very first posts about that right there. On the lock screen you can get it to show just an envelope, envelope that says blocked content or the envelope with the name and the message.

Facial recognition was great, until I went outside with sunglasses :(

Is there no way to hack facewidgets to show notifications on the AON without a lockscreen enabled?

No, because the AOD watches the lockscreen for notification. It can't show you details when it's source is disabled.
