I have been reading on how to install a custom rom and just want to clear up a couple of things. I rooted last week and have installed the free version of rom manager. I have done titanium backup (free version). Now what? Sorry, I know the instruction are there, but very specific instructions would be great. First time, still nervous. I am willing to pay for an app if needed or recommended. Thanks.

You don't need all that. Just root and clockwork recovery. Get the DroidX bootstraper from the market and find a ROM. The newest thing right now is the Gingerbread leak which is loaded similar to a ROM.

ROMs come in .zip form and once installed on SD card its easy to install them. I suggest Googling Apex, or Liberty for DroidX if you are looking for a ROM right now.

I would hold off and wait for the new Gingerbread ROMs that are soon to hit or install the rooted leak as it will give you many new features other ROMs don't have yet. If you go this route you will need Droid2 bootstraper from market (don't know why) and follow this threads instructions

DroidX bootstraper bootstraps the boot to clockwork recovery. Haha

Its an application you download from the market and install like you would any other app. When you open it it will ask for root right and give you two button. One says bootstrap recovery and the other says reboot. Click the bootstrap recovery button and a "success" screen should pop up. Then click reboot and you will be in clockwork recovery.

This is where the magic happens and the reason we root (mostly). From the clockwork recovery screen you can make backups, load custom ROMs and many other features.

Download DroidX bootstraper from market and go through the step I highlighted above.

Once in clockwork recovery there is a section that says restore/backup. Its right below install zip from sdcard. Select that and watch it back up. Takes about 5 minutes.

Selections are made with camera button and volume buttons are to navigate selections.

Take the plunge man. I was scared to do it as well, even after reading everything I could. I finally downloaded all the files I needed / could need (SBF to stock) and jumped in head first.

Sooooooooooooooooooooooo glad I did too.

I haven't needs to SBF until recently to get off non rooted Ginger leak. Very easy process.

But I didn't have to do that for the 6 months prior when I was loading ROMs and themes like crazy and making huge framework changes and mods. There shouldn't really be a need to SBF as long as you are aware of what you are doing and the consequesnces of what you are doing.

99% of thing can be cleaned up with a boot into clockwork and a factory reset.

I got bootstrapper and it is doing its backup right now of stock rom. What will it do when that is complete?

Good job! Now go to install zip from SD card.

Did you download zip first?

Do a wipe data factory reset too from clockwork.

If you didn't don't worry just reboot phone and download it and remember where its at. Then go back into clockwork recovery and install from SD card. It might boot loop so you will have to go back into stock recovery which is tricky. Just let me know when you get there.

Edit: From bootloop pull the battery. Reboot phone by holding power button and home button until android Guy with exclamation. The hold both volume buttons. Now you are in stock recovery. Wipe from there and reboot.

And by zip I mean a ROM, must be in .zip form.

You can do a wipe first, but I would recommend a wipe after you install the ROM.

Ok, sorry I left for a minute. I have made a backup, checked it on astro file manager and can see it there. I downloaded apex 1.4 to my pc it looka to be 114MB. Does that sound right so far? I don't now if there is bad versions of apex or whatever out there so hopefully what I have is good.

That's about the right size. Is it a .zip?

Put it on you SD Card. Some where you wont forget. Then go back into the bootstrapped app and wipe data factory reset. Then load .zip from SD card. Then reboot. Then done.
