Am I the only one thats gonna miss the 3D feature?

I didn't get the evo 3d because of the sacrifices for 3d. The extra lens made the back of the phone too bulky and needing two cameras caused the quality of them to be less. I would much rather have high quality 2d pics than ok quality 3d pics.

I will miss it especially now that I've found sick-flix.com. they have over 500 3D movies that look absolutely amazing on my EVO 3D. HTC watch on the other hand has only 7movies available in 3d almost a year after the phone was released which is ridiculous.

Having to pay for access to download torrent files to pirated movies kindda sounds.... not right to me.....

Yea I'll be missing the 3D feature a good bit. I used it ALOT when I first got the phone on launch day, and have slowly started to use it less and less. And before people start saying anything, no its not cause of "sacrifices" or anything else, its simply because I haven't had any reason to take any pictures/videos.

I'd use 3D alot more if there were actually any apps or something that used 3D, but that is really the only downside to the EVO 3D.

As for the people who are always saying they sacrificed stuff to enable the 3D. . . Its just rather shocking to see people saying that, specially when there have been countless documents, reviews, and demonstrations that have all said otherwise.

The 5MP camera was used because that was all people really NEEDED. At the time of development, there wasn't many phones that had more than 5MP, and those that did, had HORRIBLE image quality. So they made a smart move, and used a more reliable camera. When you take a brand new EVO 3D and start taking pictures with it, the images are better than nearly any other phone of that time. What people dont seem to realize, is that over time, the quality WILL degrade, and this will happen to EVERY PHONE YOU WILL EVER OWN. The reason for this, is because of all the apps you have on the phone. The more apps you have, the more your cpu/gpu has to keep up. And here people are going to say "pfft the amount of apps you have doesn't do anything to the image quality"... but sadly for them, it DOES.

The more apps you have installed, the more fragmented your storage space gets, meaning longer loading times for the camera, and longer saving times for the camera. All of that translates to poor picture quality cause it can't save the pictures as quickly as they need to be to maintain good images because there are more pixel corruptions. This causes even more problems for your 3D images, cause it has to take two pictures at once, and if the two pictures dont look similar enough, the eye picks the imperfections out and the 3D image looks like crap.

And that isn't even the worst part with the apps. . even if you dont have alot of apps "running" there are always alot running in the background without us realizing it.. which means more cpu being used to run those background apps and less for your camera. Again with 3D, its worse, cause then the cpu can't take the two pictures in perfect sync, and your 3D images just come out blurry.

I have this problem ALOT. I have quite alot of apps, and my pictures dont turn out too well anymore, specially my 3D. But once i wipe the phone clean and start fresh, my pictures are back to being crystal clear and looks better than any other phone's pictures that i've been able to personally compare to.

And when people say that the "mic" or "speaker" doesn't sound good or work well, its rather annoying as well. . the speaker phone is designed for when you have it LAID DOWN. You put the phone down on the tablet, and the sounds are reflected back towards you. I dare you to do it right now even! Put on a song that you have on your phone, and just hold it up in the air with the screen pointing towards you, just like every average person does when they're on speaker phone. Then after a few moments, place the phone down on a table, again with the screen facing up, and you will instantly hear better audio quality.

Yes this isn't exactly something "good" by design, but it works exactly the way they WANTED it to. Hell you can place the phone down on the table, turn the volume all the way up, walk all the way to the other side of the house, and you can STILL hear the music plain as day! Can even hear it well enough to be able to hear some lyrics and even sing along to it perfectly.

And what people tend to not realize with phone calls, is that if you can't understand what a person is saying on the phone, then chances are it is THEIR mic, NOT your speakers... My father has an EVO 3D and I am able to understand him perfectly and crystal clear, just as if he was here in the room with me. My little brother has the Original EVO 4G, and when he calls, i can't understand a word he says half the time cause its all static filled or crackly. Same with several of my friend's when they call. But just as many of my friends also have phone with very good mics, and the sound quality is nearly perfect whenever they call.

Also I dont get why people say its got a "small screen" or a "low resolution" screen. . the screen size is BIGGER than the original EVO 4G! It just looks smaller cause its in a REAL HD aspect ratio, meaning REAL 720P video.

This phone is nearly perfect in just about all aspects of its design. It works exactly the way HTC meant it to. Sadly no phone will ever actually be "perfect" because every person is different, and has different needs from their phones. Also sadly a phone is only as "wonderful" as the first month or so of its release, because as soon as another phone gets revealed, everyone wants the "new toy" because of its "better features". But that's just how the world works: you get one device with amazing specs and features, then a few months later another device is released that has improved upon the first devices specs and features.

The HTC EVO 3D is a flawless phone for its time. Sure 3D isn't a huge feature people want right now, but that's just because of its deliverance. Once a better way of giving consumers 3D capable devices is found, everyone will end up jumping on the first train to get one.

People thought computers were just a "gimmick" or a "fad" and that they would never be popular, but look at our world now.

People thought mobile phones were just "gimmicks" and that no one would want to buy one, but look at our world now.

And people thought that HD TV's were never gonna go anywhere cause they were just a "gimmick" as well, but by god look at our world now.

There hasn't been a SINGLE "invention" or "device" in history that hasn't been called a "gimmick" or a "fad", and yet almost every single one of those so called "gimmicks" are now things we depend on every single day of our lives, and wouldn't know how to live our lives without.

Oh, and people thought seat belts and air bags were "gimmicks" for cars as well. So would you rather have that "gimmicky" seat belt and air bag when you run head first into another car, or would you rather go flying through the windshield?

When I came back to Sprint I considered the EVO3D but did not end up going with it, just because of the 3D.

I'll miss the 3D as well. My wife and I found plenty of "fun" uses for it :). Though the phone will stay within the family as it will get passed down to one of the kids, so we'll still have the ability to use it when wanted.

Well that's a pretty stupid argument. If you don't like the 3d you don't have to use it. Without the 3D, it was still the best phone Sprint offered at the time.

So what was available in June of last year that HTC decided not to use?...

That is exactly the right question. The EVO 4G innovated. It was the first 4G phone and the first major 4.3" display. HTC was no longer cloning. HTC was innovating. HTC was leading. Sales went through the roof. Profits soared.

Then in June 2011, HTC went back to their High Tech Computer days. Instead of announcing the first 4.5" or 4.65" phone or the first HD phone, HTC added 3D to their own 4.3" phone. Sales dropped. Revenues began to slide back to cloner levels. HTC spent $300 million on Beats audio but that did not help either.

Three months later Samsung did the bigger High Def screens with the 4.65" Galaxy S II LTE HD. The 5.3" HD Galaxy Note was also unveiled September 1, 2011. Samsung set new records. HTC kept heading down.

The market is unrelenting. Give it what it wants and it will make you rich. Go in the wrong direction and it will try to kill you. Since 2006, the market has constantly craved bigger and higher definition screens. It was strange that HTC thought those trends had ended in 2010.

With the One X and EVO LTE, HTC now has a solid competitor for last year's Galaxy Nexus and Galaxy HD. HTC has matched their screen size, and HD.

Hopefully we will soon hear a rumor of HTC having an answer to the Note. Don't get me wrong I love HTC. I bought an HTC EVO 4G day one and loved it.

I agree with what you are saying in principle. However, you make it seem like an easy formula for success when it is not. The trick behind innovating is being able to correctly predict what the market will want and accept. This is a trick that Apple has been able to pull fo quite nicely. For example, When the original iPhone first came out, there were many people who thought that it would not be a success. there were releasing a so-called smart phone trhat was missing features that even basic flip phones had (3G and MMS messaging) but, you know what? It turned out that the masses didn't care. Apple correctly predicted that people would be more attracted to its new innovations, (multitouch, iPod-smartphone integration, UI) than they would be bothered by missing features. Who would have known?

Also, consider the Original Evo. Its biggest criticism was that it was too big for a phone and the battery life was horrendous. The screen was big, the phone was thicker than other android phones, let alone the iphone 3G and the iPhone 4. But, HTC correctly predicted that people would be more attracted to its innovations (4G data speeds, 8mp camera rear camera, front facing camera for video calling, HD video recording, kick stand, HDMI out). The people lined up in droves to get that device despite its shortcomings.

Look, my point is that it isn't always easy to predict what consumers will go for -- especially in the tech industry. Look at the Evo 3D. HTC thought they had a winner on their hands. In their eyes, based on their pass successes, they did not think Android fans really cared about thinness, but about new innovations. But Samsung proved them wrong. The Galaxy S2, when you think about it, had no real new INNOVATIONS, besides being thin at no expense of features. But Android users preferred beauty and thinness over a phone with a new kind of tech in which they felt they really would not need, or want.

So, yes, in that instance, HTC missed the ball. They did not get the kind of results they were hoping for. They incorrectly assumed that Android fans were a bunch a nerds who cared only about functionality and feature set. Turns out, we are a bunch of secretly jealous iPhone lovers who cannot bring ourselves to purchase one because we really do care about functionality. We like beauty in our products as well. Had the Evo 3D been about 3 mm thinner, it would have been a real hit.

The sacrifice for 3D was a lower def camera, lower def display, and a small screen

Those kinds of decisions are killing HTC.

Finally HTC has a phone that can take on the GS2HD from last September and Galaxy Nexus from last November.

Instead of leading the market last summer, 3D put HTC behind by months. HTC lost billions in revenue because they bet on 3D instead of HD.

I don't think you're being entirely fair here. When the Evo3D came out, there was no such thing as an HD screen for these phones (I'm not counting Apple's retina display, cause they make that themselves and everyone else had to invent the tech pretty much from scratch). As for the screen being "small", it's 4.3". How is that small? It's *still* one of the largest screens on the market, second only to the Galaxy Note (which I think is too big). And the screen is definitely not "low def". It had the highest resolution (if I remember correctly) of any Android phone when it hit the market back in June.

And what is this GS2HD you're talking about? When the GalaxyS2 came out, the screen res wasn't HD. It was about the same as the Evo3D. The first actual "HD" screen to hit the market was the Galaxy Nexus, back in November (?), 5 months after the Evo3D had been released. That's a lifetime in the world of mobile electronics these days.

And as for the "lower def camera", I was always the one my friends asked to take pictures, especially at the bar, because "I had the best camera phone". That might only been true of that group of friends (and only in 2D mode to be sure), but their phones included Galaxy S, X2, Galaxy S2, Incredible 2, and even a couple of iPhones (blasphemy, I know).

We're all entitled to our own opinions, of course, but not our own facts. If you don't like the 3D, that's certainly your prerogative, but don't throw false information around as a basis for not liking it. That doesn't help a conversation.

Where HTC and Sprint went wrong was their marketing. Everyone thought *everything* was 3D on the phone. The people I showed it off to were almost always impressed. A couple of guys at my last job were dogging me for wanting one, but then turned around and bought one themselves once they saw mine. When the Evo3D came out, it was way ahead of the spec curve, just like the original Evo was. They just shouldn't have called it the "3D" since I think it "scared" people.

Personally, I enjoy the 3D features of my Evo. It's awesome taking 3D pics/vids of the kids.

You right about the 5MP camera. That has long been considered the "optimal" size for a cell phone CCD. More megapixels does *not* equal better image quality, people. I do have to disagree with you on the other points here, though. The number of apps "installed" on the phone will not affect image quality, unless those apps are somehow automatically affecting every image you take (I'm not aware of any apps that do this, or if this is even possible with Android). As for apps "running" in the background, you're mistaken. The apps that you see loaded (most of them) aren't "running". They're simply "loaded" into memory in an idle state in case you need to use them again. Some apps do run as a "service" meaning that can respond to events (like PUSH notifications) without the app actually being open, but this doesn't mean that they are taking up CPU power. If you really want to see what's going on, download "System Panel" from the market. It'll show you which apps are actually running, which ones are services, and which ones are "cached" in memory (idle). It will also show you CPU usage *per* app, which makes it a great tool for tracking down an app that eating your battery.

I think where most people have problems with their camera's image quality is because they change settings and forget that they changed them. You can get fairly good pictures with the Evo3D's camera (2D mode, anyway) even in low-light, if you know how to adjust the settings. And using an HDR camera app, I've gotten some amazing cloud/landscape shots that people can't believe are taken with a cell phone.

And what people tend to not realize with phone calls, is that if you can't understand what a person is saying on the phone, then chances are it is THEIR mic, NOT your speakers... My father has an EVO 3D and I am able to understand him perfectly and crystal clear, just as if he was here in the room with me. You're dead-one with the rest of your points. My g/f had an HTC WinMo phone and I could *never* understand a damn thing she said when I had my speaker phone on (and sometimes even on the regular earpiece) but, since she got an iPhone I never have trouble understanding her. And before anyone starts to rant about that last line, she's hot, she plays video games, watches G4 and thinks I'm "cool" for being able to play GoldenEye64 in emulation on my media center with actual N64 controllers. And you should have seen how excited she got when I ordered another controller online so she could play with me. She gets to use whatever phone she wants ;)

And you're right. This phone had some pretty awesome specs when it came out, but I still remember everyone I mentioned it to saying "Yeah, but I don't want a 3D phone. I think it's going to hurt my eyes after a while." Sprint and HTC dropped the ball on the way they marketed these phones, since everyone thought they were 3D all the time. And, silly as it may sound, I think a lot of people didn't like the fact that they took out the kickstand. Personally, I'm glad to see it making a comeback.

I really love 3D and also enjoy watching 3d movie on my phone. I'll eventually get a 3D tv. My next cell phone will have 3D or I won't switch till I have to.
