Am lost, please give details - recovery, ROM, Gapps, kernel, etc

As you probably found out, when you download the ROM and gapps they will go into your downloads folder. It's my understanding that system is wiped when you install the ROM and you shouldn't have to wipe it manually. I don't wipe system (under mounts and storage in recovery) myself, but it's become a standard procedure for many. Good luck and happy flashing!

You know, this is the warmest, friendliest forum I have ever belonged to.

I sat here with my stock gnex for weeks, reading guides, getting confused, then getting lost trying to find one method to compare with another. But I learned ... a lot.

Then I just did it. Rooted then backed up. Success! Bought a few apps labeled "geeks only" and romed a couple times. Got a kernel! I haven't broken this phone yet!

Then I read threads like this and learn there are easier ways to do this ... or I now prefer another way to do that.

All because you guys are not only smart, but willing to share what you know, and share your time helping the rest of us figure this out.

Thanks in advance for the next time you guys post on AC the answer I was looking for.
Lol we all had to start learning somewhere... If friendly people didn't explain things to me I wouldn't know anything, so I enjoy paying it forward :)

ROM and gapps flashing:
Do I need to download ROM and gapps to my SDcard first, then wipe data, cache, dalvik, and system? How do I wipe system (aka format)? Do I absolutely need to wipe system or is just wiping data, cache, and dalvik enough?

Yes to sdcard.... Wiping system is always a good idea. AOSP based ROMs will in fact do it for you automatically, but we still recommend doing it on your own before you flash, just helps prevent ghosts in the machine later on :)

Oh, and once you're rooted, you can never go back.

Just an FYI.

[Read: You CAN, but it would be a very poor decision on your part to go back ;-)]

I used GooManager. Flashed CM10 M1 and gapps listed for that ROM. All seems okay so far.

Thanks. You guys helped me so much in this thread to get my head wrapped around Android hackery. I no longer feel like a noob. By the way, my level of noob was deep, as this Gnex that I have is my first-ever smartphone. I got the phone on Tuesday, unlocked and rooted on Wednesday, flashed the first ROM on Thursday, and flashed the second ROM on Friday. I have learned so much in the past week.

I tried M1 for a day, and then flashed the 9/14 Jellybro. No problems, no mistakes, and no errors that I've noticed. I must say, I like Euroskank Jellybro quite a bit, as it's smooth and bug-free in my use of it.

You guys here at Android Central are my number one crew. I have no doubts looking for what I need in here.

Am running Jellybro nightlies. I've read a few guides to flashing ROMs and have seen that for a dirty flash, I need to wipe cache and dalvik, which is no problem. The confusion I'm having is do I need to wipe system also? That's clean flash material, or so I thought.

Basically, can I just wipe cache and dalvik for a dirty flash?

CM (and almost every AOSP-based rom) will wipe system for you. I wipe system for a dirty flash because I like to be thorough and I am very OCD when it comes to flashing. The choice is yours, but I recommend it.

To add to the above, it takes all of a few seconds to wipe system. I see no reason not to. Safer than assuming flashing your rom will perform the wipe. It's just a good habit.

Yup. And if you've ever tried wiping something 3 times in recovery, you'll notice that each subsequent wipe after the first still seems to be doing something. Only that third wipe is close to "instant." So that sort of reinforces the idea of wiping thoroughly :).

Wiping to be sure isn't the issue. I should have fully explained why I even asked about wiping system. I want to flash a new nightly without having to reinstall all apps and would like to keep my Swiftkey data for how I type. Not taking TiBu into account (assume there is no TiBu), what happens if I wipe cache and dalvik and flash a new nightly? What do I lose?

Nothing. You won't lose apps unless you wipe data.

That same technique works in the bathroom.
