Ambient display

From what I understand, it uses the secondary subprocessor which allows it to consume low levels of battery. I would be interested to see how much battery you would actually save.

I see, but if the feature turns on the screen for no reason, which is what i experienced a lot on the Nexus 6. then it would still uses up battery.

If you have any security at all on your device (Password/PIN/Pattern/Fingerprint), you wouldn't pocket dial anyone from Ambient Display. You still need to unlock the device.

I'm using the fingerprint reader (which has been awesome so far), but I also use the on body detection smart lock. I would just assume that if the phone is clever enough to know when it's in my pocket and not lock itself, it could do the same for the ambient display.

Glad to hear it's working for ya. I agree, it's a cool feature. I'm not too worried about battery life since my phone spends most of its downtime in my pocket. I assume (or thought I read) that the ambient display only activates when the phone has been sitting on a table? Don't want to be **** dialing people

Just played with it a bit. Does not activate at all when proximity sensor detects something close. Does not activate when tipped side to side while holding it in hand - only activates when tilted forward/back - mimicking a lay down then pick up from a table?.

haha, good investigative work. maybe i will try it out too now.

What proximity sensor? There isn't one on this device.

There has to be. Something is telling the phone to turn the display off when I hold it up to my ear during a call. I imagine it's those sensor(s) immediately under the top speaker.

I thought you were talking about one triggering the Ambient Display to turn on. There isn't one that works in that manner.

Any reason why the ambient display logic wouldnt use the same sensor? I just did it again - hand covering top of phone and pick up = nothing. Pick it up without hand covering the top = ambient display activation.

Not sure I agree with this...I generally turn mine off with the power button and picking it up turns on the display...

Same.

I have noticed that I have to pick the phone up off the desk/table/horizontal surface and it will not light up until almost vertical. I will have to test more...I'd like for it to light up with just a tap.

I'm not a big fan of the ambient display. I prefer the double tap on my N9. A combo of the double tap and LED notification is my nirvana for my N5X. Alas, I'm going LED only. Yelp flashes green and kik flashes red with no root or special dedicated LED control app.

Yeah, I guess I was hoping it would be like the Moto G I had for awhile. It didn't have the sensors to detect you waving your hand over it but I could tap the screen and it would wobble enough to turn on the screen and show my notifications or lack thereof. This one I have to shake it like a polaroid picture and it still doesn't work.

You need to have a lock screen for it to work. If you've disabled the lock screen it won't work.

I'll just glance over at my Nokia real quick—ah the Glance screen is on because my phone is on the charger. No texts, but I have a missed call. That's nice. Just double tap the display and...oh I don't care if they called. Go away. Oh but Windows Central just posted another article, cool! Now I'll take my phone off the charger and wave my hand over it...oh the Glance screen came on. How lovely of it. Still no texts, how sad.
The Motorola implementation is great too.

There has to be a proximity sensor, it's not an $80 phone haha. The Motorola Style has what, three proximity sensors? One up top and two at the bottom? Dare I say four sensors?
