Ambient Mode for notifications

just got a Google Pixel to replace my Nexus 6P.
one thing i've noticed... it's supposed to have Ambient Display for incoming notifications, but all it's doing is actually waking up the screen properly.
the Nexus 6P also had ambient display but only woke up in the screen in ambient mode (ie faint B&W).

is the Pixel supposed to do this as well, or is not really Ambient Mode like the 6P had?
Ambient Display is enabled in System > Display

actually.. i've just noticed that sometimes it does a proper ambient display, and other times it's a full screen wake up.

I believe it was different on the pixel. There was a thread about it somewhere. The pixel also didn't have the raise to wake like previous nexus devices. Google added it back along with double tap to wake in a recent update that also fixed some of the connectivity issues being experienced. . However I believe only people in Canada have received that update as of now. Also keep in mind the Pixel has a notification light.
