Amoled Screen burn in is back!

I'm pretty nervous about this as well. I was completely sold on the 6P...until I heard it was AMOLED. For me, it was a huge, massive disappointment. I had burn in on my Galaxy Nexus and S3, and then I decided I only wanted LCD devices moving forward.

I also really want a fingerprint sensor and a Nexus flagship. So torn.

I wouldn't worry about it. Just get a decent extended warranty from your carrier or SquareTrade and you'll be covered.

Do you worry about your car's headlight housing turning yellow or foggy?(happened to my 5-month-old new car) Or getting hit in the head by space junk WT1190F that is scheduled to crash back to Earth on Nov 13? I don't think so.... :)

I am with you on being nervous and I have so nearly bought the Moto Style but I went into a John Lewis department store today which is in the UK and I saw the S6 screen on display and wow it was amazing and if it is the same panel on the 6P I will be delighted, also if you are in the UK John Lewis will be stocking the 6P and they give a two year guarantee on the handset so if it does get obvious burn in then I am confident they will replace it or refund.

John Lewis customer service is second to none and that's why when I am planning to buy an expensive item or any electrical items I always use them so for me I feel happier getting the 6P from them :) if you are not from the UK then you won't have a clue who I am talking about :)

Just get the 6P and don't worry too much as surely they wouldn't launch a phone with a screen that burns in under pretty normal use it must have been heavily tested prior to launch (I hope)

So buy the 5X. Granted, it isn't quite as nice as the 6P but still quite good, and has the fingerprint reader with the Nexus goodness.

Re: Burn In Question

Lies and exaggerations. I think that reviewer got a bad unit. As having the 'latest' Samsung AMOLED panel, there will be no widespread issues. (But of course that is what warranties are all about) If you choose to allow these reports to sway your decision NOT to buy... I'm sure those in line to order will gladly take your spot.

LIES? Seriously? Every amoled device I or my family members have owned has had some sort of burn in or ghosting at some point in its life cycle. It is inevitable, and it is a fact that it will happen at some point.

Re: Burn In Question

Is everyone in this thread ignoring the fact your phone comes with a 12 month warranty??

i would also assume the majority of you are going to replace this one right about the time warranty expires.

Also if you paid with a decent credit card (platinum, signature, etc) that they extend manufacture warranty another 12 months.

Something to think about while you worry. :)

Oh and one of your pixels is dead. sorry

People are excitable and there's plenty of people who used the amoled screen as a reason to write this phone off before ever seeing a review let alone seeing one in person. The MXPE forum is full of them...

Just look at the OP if you want an example of jumping to conclusions.

I'm not saying we'll never have any burn in issues but let's just keep some perspective and give the crying wolf a break.

While it is a concern to me, it's also not stopping me from getting one. I've had 8 smartphones since I switched from flip phones, 5 of which were AMOLED devices. I've only had permanent burn in on one, and the beginnings of burn in on two. But I've found that adjusting things like screen orientation can solve the issue if you catch it quick enough, so that's what I'll do here.

As far as the MXPE, I was ready to order one until 2 things happened, the 6p was announced, and Motorola's handling of MM updates. While they may end up being a non issue, I'd rather not risk it. And this is coming from someone who's last three phones were Motorolas.

So in short, be aware of burn in being a possibility, but I wouldn't let it keep me from buying one either. Most of what I've said here was only to those who act like burn in is a made up thing, when it isn't.

No, its definitely not a made-up thing. AMOLED screens just do that. It is a fact of its design structure that eventually those pixels will degrade and more often than not they degrade unevenly because of the way the screen is used. Cell phones get away with this because most people aren't as sensitive to the burn in, and most of the time the burn in is not very noticeable. With people recycling phones every hear to two years, it makes it even less of an issue because many people trade in their phone or get new ones before any serious burn in occurs.

While I'm bugged by burn in, I'm not letting the AMOLED screen stop me from getting this phone because:

1. 12 month factory warranty
2. After that, nexus protect
3. After that, in extreme cases, I'm sure I could have the screen replaced out of warranty, if I'm still using the phone at that time. To compare, an s6 screen and digitizer is 130 bucks right now. Not too terrible if I'm feeling the 6p for the LONG term.

Hey, that's not funny! The shuttle that broke apart during re-entry in 2002-2003 over Texas and Louisiana had parts land in my yard. Not a good time on an Army base.

Great, now I have to go find the pixel tester app again...
Seriously, I flip enough between portrait and landscape that hopefully it won't be a problem while I have the phone. So sorry for whoever buys it next.

Prices must've dropped since I priced the screen on my S3. They were telling me around $250-275 for the panel, or the repair shop was trying to screw me. But since they weren't trying to sell me on anything, I don't know how it would've benefitted them.

My Moto X 2013 has image burn, but I've had it for nearly 2 years and I only notice it when the display is in immersive mode. I'm sure that after a long time, the Nexus 6P will experience this issue, but I figure that you may have already replaced it by that point.

Re: Burn In Question

It is inevitable, and it is a fact that it will happen at some point.

But agent Smith said the same thing to Neo and look how that turned out! They fired him, made him wear pointy ears and speak Elvish, was fired again and made to wear a red skull mask until finally being killed by Capt. America!

Re: Burn In Question

My wife and I both have Galaxy Nexus and use the daily. When we got them I was concerned about burn in. I'm sure if I set up the right screen I may see burn in but the reality is that we see none. Brightness set on Auto. It's been a none issue for us. I remember the burned in crt screens in the lab that said VM 3270. You could see that burn in all the way across the room. That was burn in! I'll set my N6P on auto and not worry about it.

All oled pixels wear out with use. The pixels that turn off completely to make black (i.e. those in the status and nav bars) wear more slowly than those on the rest of the screen that are always on, resulting in the "burn-in" that is being discuss in this thread. This is different from the burn in that occurs with plasma TVs in which the pixels get "stuck" in a certain state.

I've read or watched probably ten or twelve Nexus 6P reviews and the Android Police one is the only one that said anything at all about burn-in. They may just have a bad review unit (It happens, Andrew Martonik got a bum Nexus 5X if you listen to the last AC podcast.) I say let's wait and see if this is a real issue or not. It's too early to tell at this point.

AP used the phone for a week before posting their results. With the other reviews you've read, how long did the reviewer had the phone before posting the review?
