"An update to your DDR application is available" message. I've read other posts prior w/no solutions

I have a Moto G3 (3rd gen) from Virgin Mobile that was updated from a lollipop to a marshmallow. Ever since then I've been having issues wtih the phone (details written below). I've seen a few questions on this website about this issue but sadly, no solutions. I am well aware of this topic: http://forums.androidcentral.com/ask-question/704981-my-htc-home-screen-stuck-ddr-application-update.html but then it has a dead end with no solutions. I have been doing a lot of digging and I've discovered some things that hopefully may help you guys know what is actually going on.

Basically, after I had updated my phone from lollipop to marshmallow, I am now seeing a black screen and on the top left is written "Activation" with a check mark in a green circle to the left of it. Keep that information in mind because this is important. There is a message below saying, "Welcome!" and below that it says: "An update to your DDR application is available. During this download and installation, you may not be able to place or receive a call. You may need to sign into your account after installation." There is a "Please wait" and a circle spinning as if something is happening but I've been basically looking at this screen for about half a day at this point. It keeps retrying to do this update but nothing happens. Because of this, I am not able to make or receive phone calls. I am connected to Virgin Mobile as it says in the notification tray and am fully connected to wi-fi and going online and browsing websites works fine. I have phone data and wi-fi on my account.

This "Activation" screen is very obtrusive and will not go away, even when I click the back or home icon. The only way I'm even able to get around on my phone is by doing a search query on the Google search bar when I click on the recent apps icon (square icon). Through there, I am able to instruct Google to launch apps (some are easier to launch than others, and some are with frustration, since Google doesn't always know when I'm trying to open an app and instead gives me search results from the world wide web). That is how I can look around a little bit and see what does and doesn't work.

Interestingly enough, when I tried to launch Google Now through the search bar, it said, "Activation is currently your default launcher. To try the Google Now Launcher, select it from Settings > Home" So I go to settings under the home tab and lo and behold, there are two launchers, Google Now and the same "Activation" with the check mark in the green circle to it's left. "Activation" was currently checked. So I checked the Google Now launcher instead and hoped my problems would be resolved. Unfortunately, there was no option to disable, delete or do anything else with this "Activation" launcher. When I tried it out, nothing had changed, I have the same message on my phone, still cannot receive or make calls and when I try to launch Google Now, it tells me the same message, that "Activation" currently selected and I have to select Google Now as my default launcher. But when I go back, Google Now is selected. So now I'm really lost.

I'm not sure what this "Activation" thing is because my account is already activated, and I have been using this phone for months. I called Virgin Mobile and told customer service the issue, and they said that my phone is working well and is updated and that they are not sure what the problem is. The customer service rep had me do a reboot by dialing ##72786# but it did not work. The rep forwarded my case to tech support and said that I should be hearing from them within 24 hours, which is a long time to go without getting and receiving calls :( I read in one of the topics about the DDR possibly being a malware and I'm not sure but I feel that the issue is closely linked with this "Activation" thing. I wouldn't be surprised if they worked hand in hand somehow. I also cleared the cache partition but it didn't solve the problem.

Thank you so much for reading and I'm sorry that this was so long but I feel that the more details that are given the easier it will be for someone to help. I really tried to note everything that I have seen and done. I would love for some helpful advice on how to solve this :) Thanks in advance!

Welcome, and thank you for the detailed description.
Does the trouble persist in Safe Mode?
