hi everyone , hope this is right place to post a question. im used to an iphone and im having problems working the samsung galaxy s4. can anyone tell me why ive got an x beside my phone icon . Also is there a way to remove chat on and the story book apps on the phone as i wont be using them . Thankyou

Can you post a screenshot of the phone icon?

As for ChatON and Story Book apps, you can't remove them but you can disable them (unless you're rooted, then you can delete them... think of Jailbreak for iStuff). Just go to Settings, Application Manager (under the General tab), go to the "All" tab and find ChatON and Story Book. Inside each app, you should find a "TURN OFF" button. This disables the app entirely (and it even disappears from your launcher). Should you ever want them back in action, just go to the same Application Manager but to the "Turned Off" tab and there you can choose to turn them back on.

i dont know how to post a photo.
when i try to disable the apps it says do you want to replace this app with the factory version , im not understanding this

The message you're getting about the version getting replaced with factory one is because these system apps cannot be fully uninstalled, so first you have to 'downgrade' them to the original version (uninstall any updates that might have happened before) so you can turn them off. But don't worry, if you turn them back on, the app will tell you about the required updates, re-download and re-apply them, and that's it.

As for the icon in your notification bar is to let you know you have missed calls.

Aww thanks , I'm sorry ,I'm a bit thick with this phone but honest I was ok with the iPhone

If you're not getting 3G it could be a number of things.

1) Is this the first time you use the phone with your SIM? Then, sometimes, your carrier needs to configure the phone (usually they can just send you an SMS and it will auto-configure) so that it can receive data from them.
2) Also, are you sure the model you have is compatible with your carrier's network? Some models only work in voice mode in some countries and carriers if you didn't get 'the right version' of the phone.
3) Make sure that the 'Mobile Data' switch is ON. Pull down on the notification bar and scroll through the switches there to look for it; if you press the POWER button it might also be there in some versions.

Does the carrier manage what the icons look like on the S4? My missed calls icon is a phone facing down with an arrow bouncing off of it.

Yup, if your phone is carrier-branded, the icons might change as the carriers implement their own ROMs. 'Popular' icons that are known to change depending on the carrier are the 4G network indicator, the GPS icon, and even the WiFi graphic.
