Android 2.0 to 4.0, no need for task killers?

I remember back when I first received my HTC Droid Incredible running 2.2, everyone recommended that I get Advanced Task Killer to save battery life. Now, with my GS3, everyone is saying the opposite: don't use a task killer, let the OS's native task manager take care of things, using a task killer will often actually decrease battery life.

Why this paradigm shift? Is it because task killers benefited Android 2.x but not Android 4.x anymore?

My understanding is that task killers were necessary to deal with poor memory management. Android has evolved in a big way when it comes to memory management.
I haven't used a task killer since 2.3.5.
