Hello all!

A friend of mine who is far more tech savvy than I has Android 2.1 on his Droid, and I got to try it out for a few hours.

Here's what I noticed about the changes:

-The new gallery is way cooler LOOKING, but also much slower to load on the Droid than the old gallery. I think the Multitouch gallery is still the best option out there. The swiping motions to move left and right have been implemented though.

-The new menu is WAY more smooth, and definitely offers eye candy with it's rolling design. However, just one thing: I remember what I liked on my Droid as opposed to ALL the other Android phones (except the N1) is that when I opened the app drawer, you could see 5 rows of apps (i.e. 20 apps at a time). However, with the scrolling animation, you can only see 4 rows now (so 16 apps). Not a big deal. But I'm thinking for other phones, you might be able to see even less. Additionally, scrolling is slower. In my app drawer, you can do a scrolling swipe and it will go from the top of the drawer to the bottom. Here, a similar scroll will only move about 2-3 rows.

-The 'cards' thing is way less cool than people think, though it is useful. You basically long press on the dots on the bottom of the home screen (the ones that indicate which screen you're on. For example, if you're on the middle screen, you will see 2 dots on the left and 2 on the right), and it will show you little 'cards' off all 5 of your home screens. IMO, it's simply for show, since long pressing and then clicking a homescreen card takes longer than just doing 2 or 3 swipes to the left or right. Still a nice option though.

- Live wallpapers seem cool, and the ones I tried are really fun, but I'm worried about how they will affect CPU and Battery performance. However, it's fun to have, so I hope they are not too power-intensive.

As far as speed, I honestly didn't notice that much of a difference on the Droid. I'm assuming the speed enhancements will be more for the other phones that are a little slower to begin with. The phone is still as fast as normal, with the same amount of stutter when flipping through the app menu or between home screens.

If anyone has any questions, just let me know. I figured it would be useful to post this from my novice perspective so that people who aren't as tech-savvy can envision what 2.1 will do on a day-to-day basis.

You are talking about a flawed baked rom composed of parts from a Nexus dump.

Yea I have to agree with DA6 here. Judging by how good the OS was at launch and with the 2.0.1 release I can only imagine that the officially released version of 2.1 for the droid will be good too. Much better than the baked rom. I'm using a 2.1 leak too and it's as quick (a little buggier, but not much) as the stock, so I'm sure the real thing will be good.

I'm very excited to see the official released 2.1 because my 2.1 leak is pretty stable (more than any OS my storm had).

I don't know I wiped my phone and loaded 2.01 onto my phone and after about five minutes I could not stand it and reinstall 2.1 I found 2.01 to be slow and laggy I just can't wait for the official 2.1 to drop

Oh, I'm sure the bugs will be worked out-- I was mainly just commenting on new features.

However, DA6, the final release won't change the function of the cards, will it?

So did I read correctly? 2.1 on the Droid will have 5 home screens? And it will have the live wallpapers like the Nexus One? Having those 2 will be awesome!

No, however the lag should be gone.

Yes, it will.

i've tried pretty much all the 2.1 roms. I liked them all for sure. I'm not really sure I felt any speed difference tho. To be honest, I moved back to 2.0.1 and its blazingly fast. Especially the app tray - in 2.0.1 the app tray is 1000% more usable and fast than the 3d app tray from 2.1. I'm hoping the 2.1 tray just wasn't optimized for the droid yet, cause I spent 2 weeks trying it and after going back to 2.0.1, I'm in heaven.

Don't get me wrong 2.0.1 is cool, but the best parts for me were the 5 screens for home and some of the new apps such as 3d gallery and news/weather widget. There is now available a custom rom (requires root) that is built on 2.0.1 but modifies the home launcher to have the 5 screens WITH the normal app tray and all the 2.1 apps. Yeah I lose the home page cards and 3d app tray from 2.1's launcher, but all I wanted was the 5 screens :) And to top it all off, the stock home auto rotates to landscape and is completely stable, no FC ever.

All that said, I'm expecting the official droid 2.1 build to be awesome as all the bugs I found in the modified roms should be fixed, so in short, great times to come for all!

5 screens, cards, auto rotate, no force closes. Sounds like you need launcher++, the gallery apk, widget apk, clock apk and music apk. That would almost be the same and not require root.

hey DA? will it have the minnesota vikings superbowl champions wallpaper? im hoping it will. lol.

That is as close as your gonna get to the real thing so live it up... HAHAHA just kidding guys. my cowboys are going to win anything so you can make fun of me all you want.
