Android 4.3

OK, I'm not a rom'er or a flasher - i just want the best most updated version of android on the phone I spent a lot of money on; which is what I thought I'd get from VZW. They are silent on the matter of course. The phone is long out of inventory, and come December I believe a lot of people will upgrade from it, leaving even less of a reason for VZW to care about it and us.

Rather than flexing and posturing - does anyone have any real insight or at least and educated theory about when and if this phone will get updated to either 4.3 or 4.4?

And, if VZW is not going to put any more time and attention to this phone what do you think of a noob actually trying to update this thing himself. Forgive me but I know NOTHING about how to do it. I'm not as worried about voiding warranty as I am bricking the thing and then being without a lifeline to the world. Can anyone point me to an ***** proof guide on how to unlock the phone and then put a new rom on it?

Thanks.

really? " i d i o t " got censored?

Very easy instructions and friendly people to assist.

I bought on release day and was stock until factory reset and flashing shiny.

I've been running 4.3 since July and it's like having a new phone.

The worse/best is doing a factory reset. After almost two years it was good to clear everything and start fresh. Figuring out what and how to backup was harder than flashing the rom. You can do it. It's totally worth it.

Definitely check out the above mentioned shiny rom. I've been on it since 4.3 came out (finally got sick of waiting for Verizon). All you have to do to install it is download the rom onto your SD card (or anywhere else you can find it easily) and then download the clockworkmod rom manager from Google play. Then, in app flash the rom... Super simple super easy.

Stock Android from Google is AOSP. There are plenty of ROMs built off straight AOSP that will provide an exact experience to what is released from Google because it is the same. You think Google builds their releases different than these "amateurs"?

kludge from an amateur seriously?

And as we have seen you don't get stock android from Google on the Verizon Galaxy Nexus.

U mad bro?

I did this a few days ago and I can't believe how much better it is. It feels almost like when I first bought it!

To those who are still on the fence about unlocking the bootloader and flashing a ROM, let me tell you that I was originally in your same position. This phone is a Nexus phone, and I shouldn't have to unlock it to get the latest update. But the reality of the situation is that Verizon is awful and you will have to wait 4+ months after an update is released before seeing anything if you wait for Verizon to push it to you.

The Shiny ROM is as close to stock as possible. It adds nothing beyond what stock offers. If you want the stock experience without any extra bells and whistles, this is what you want. You'll finally be able to get the updates from Google as they come out and no longer have to wait months and months. Just go for it and don't look back. I'm so glad that I did this and feel that I should have done it long ago.
