Android Auto app on my LG Leon with Andriod Lollipop 5.0.1 does not work with my Pioneer Stereo, how can I get this to work?

Android Auto app on my LG Leon with Andriod Lollipop 5.0.1 does not work with my Pioneer Stereo

I properly installed the Android Auto app, it launches, and the LG Leon phone is properly connected to USB port 2 as described in the operation manual. The Pioneer stereo is properly configured to automatically connect to a phone with Android Auto. The Pioneer radio firmware has the latest 1.0.3 software installed.
For some reason, the two just don't communicate. The phone was purchased specifically for use with the car stereo as I already had a cell phone.
If the LG Leon is not going to work, is there a reasonably cell phone that does not require a long service contract?

Google Nexus phones are usually the best answer for compatibility with Google software and updates.

Moto X works as well.
