Android Auto music controls

I installed Android Auto 2.0 and I love the idea of using it stand alone since I drive a '95 BMW with no bluetooth. I tried to play music with various apps but I can't seem to get the controls on the app like in the screenshots I've seen. How am I able to get that? Any help would be great, thanks.
