Android Backup Service doesn't seem to be working on HTC M8? No backups in 1 year.

I am really stuck here, since my HTC One M8 has started having some crashing problems and I want to do a factory reset. So here goes...

Since HTC has disabled its HTC Backup service in favor of Android Backup Service, I'm uncertain if it is working or if backups are somewhere in the cloud I can't see them. But here's what I know:

-The last backup my phone performed was to Google Drive 1 year ago.
-I have plenty of space available on Google Drive.
-My phone is on Android Marshmallow, 6.20.651.3, unrooted
-I have rebooted, uninstalled, and reinstalled Google Drive a number of times
-Under Settings->Backup & Reset->Backup, "Backup my data", "Backup account", and "Automatic restore" are properly set, though when flipping the switch for "Back up my data" off and on again, it deleted the year-old backup in Drive
-I made sure to backup my photos and videos to Drive (that wasn't set)
-Under Settings->Accounts & sync->Google, all of the App Data, Calendar, Contacts, etc. are checked, with recent syncs

Now what I can't tell is if there needs to be a "bundled" backup like I would traditionally be familiar with that goes to Google Drive->Backups. If so, then that's clearly not working. Or is it the case that the deprecation of HTC Backup wasn't cleanly implemented for Marshmallow, leaving settings options that don't actually do anything (Settings->Backup & Reset->Backup) - this suggests that the syncing within Settings->Accounts & sync->Google is actually the Android Backup Service a few articles talk about, and if I reset my phone, it will all "magically" come back.

Hopefully this all makes sense, and someone can clarify if my phone isn't working properly or if it's working as intended.

In Drive settings - manage backups, you will see all the apps and the date when they were last backed up, can you please check that?

It says "No Backup Data available." If I press "Turn on Backup my Data" then it sends me back to HTC's Backup & reset screen, with the settings already on

Strange indeed. You could try wiping cache and data of the Android process in charge of the backup procedure but I don't know which one is it.
Did you try entering recovery mode and wipe cache partition? If that dosent work do a factory reset. If the contacts are in Google account nothing important will be lost and you just have to manually install every app that you have. In Google play store - my apps - library, you will find every app you have ever installed, in case you forget any. And it's good tho leave those never used app behind.
I've had the M8 since 4.4.2 and did factory reset every time the update was significant. Does wonders to the smoothness and bugs. Did you ever did it?
Sorry I can't help you better.
