I am currently running xp and 7, I would eventually like to move away from using Microsoft products. I know android is based off of Linux. I was wondering how well they interacted. I was thinking about OpenSuse for an old laptop. Any suggestions.

I might get flack for this but I would suggest Ubuntu if your a first time user for linux, I don't know how well they work together but I know you can mount your microSD card on your computer to work with linux.

Or you could give ChromeOS a shot if you're looking to try NON-Microsoft. It runs off a USB stick on a windows machine...

I'm running Ubuntu on my laptop and Linux Mint on my netbook. I've had multiple different flavors of linux on both of them just to get a feel for the different distributions, and all of them had no problem seeing my Droid. It's just treated as a USB type drive, allowing you to access the folders on the SD card. It's nice and simple drag and drop.

As far as Android compatibility....Are you talking just to view pictures and whatnot? Or a rooted device to install apk files to? I have Ubuntu at the moment, and a rooted phone. ADB installed on my system, and they play very nicely together.

If you looking to get your feet wet and have a stable running *nix box (I say this because Solaris is Unix, or at least was last time I used it... IDK what Oracle did to it.) go with Ubuntu... Simply put it just works, it supports a lot of hardware and the installation is quick and simple (it can even be installed with out modifying your hard drive, or removing Windows). A lot of schools use RedHat or Fedora Core (essentially the same) and its a good starting point for those with a bit more aptitude for computers, being that it is quick and simple install but dose not hold your hand through everything once installed like Ubuntu.

I thought you got aptitude with Debian-based systems, and yum with Redhat based ;)

Just speaking from my experience... the moment the schools I went to started talking Linux it was always RedHat.

With that said the hardcore Linux guys I know use Deb variants. Me I would like to delve in to Gentoo some day.

It was a (rather poor) geek joke, aptitude is the Debian-based updater and RedHat users have yum as an equivalent. Therefore Debian derived distro users have more aptitude than the others ;)

RedHat tends to attract a lot of professionals because of RedHat Enterprise Linux - by having a brand behind it companies feel there's better support. I haven't played with RedHat or Fedora in ages (pre-YUM days), but I'd be interested in messing around with CentOS (the free, standard Linux support version of RHEL) if I ever get time.

Been a wail since I played with Deb, but now that you point that out I remember... lol

My favorite part of redhat back when i used it last in 1998 was the 'redneck ' language option in the installer. "Put yer CD in that there funny-lookin' cupholder in the front."
Now I prefer debian, it's still free, and doesn't default to installing a bunch of m$ windoze-like things running in the background like Ubuntu does (anyone else hate automatic updates?)
Debian's also cool because I can run most of the same stuff on my heavily-modded phone as my PC.
