T-Mobile Galaxy S8 Android Message App Notification

I know there has been discussion about Oreo removing individual contact notifications. That's not the issue I'm having. I have never used individual contact notifications. I simply have one notification sound assigned to all incoming text messages received in the Android Messenger app.

Since the OS update, even though I have a preferred notification selected in the app, every incoming text message is sounding the default system notification along with a vibration.

I simply cannot figure out how to get Android Messenger to respond to my notification selection.

Anyone have any ideas?

I had the same problem as you, and it was slightly annoying until I figured it out.

You can either:
1. Go into each of your messages threads and change the notification sound from the system default to your messages notification.
OR
2. Delete the message thread and the next time you get a message from that person the messages notification will be used. Note: you could save your messages using a back up app, delete, and install the back up. This might turn use the messages notification, though I've not tried this.

Also to note any new messages from people not in your current messages thread will use the correct notification.

I think this is to do with the new notification channels with Oreo.

You are right. Selecting the desired notification within each individual contact does the trick. However, that will be incredibly time consuming to accomplish.

I will attempt to backup my messages and try deleting the message thread. I don't want to lose all of my past messages so I will have to figure out how to do a backup.
