Android messages and AOD notifications

Ok, so I've been reading about how stock android messages is changing to "android messages". Today I had the update and am trying it out. However, there are no AOD notifications with the app. Does anyone know if it is possible to get the notifications for this app? If not I'll just go back to the "old" android default "messages" app.

Stock Messaging that comes with the Samsung device isn't changing names, Google Messenger has changed to Android Messages.

Make sure notifications for it are turned on in Settings - Notifications, then that AOD is set to read notifications at Settings - Lock screen and security - Other security settings - Notification access, make sure Always On Display it turned ON.

I've gotten notifications from Android Messages (AKA Google Messenger) just fine.

I just noticed after the Nougat update my AOD notifcations are no longer appearing.

It seems the notifcations only work if you have a lock screen setup.

I didn't have a lock screen before and they worked. Now they don't.

Anyway to get around this? I hate lock screens

I've noticed this too. Can't get any notifications via AOD unless I have a lock screen. Bummer

I have a lock screen and it won't even show me the icons of missed calls and msgs

Same here. Frustrating....
