basically title says it all,

I'm new to Android and not sure how to achieve this (using phone as USB drive).

Back in the day of my Palm Pre Plus as soon as i plugged in my phone it would ask to go in "USB mode"

this phone wants me to install HTC sync and Verizon software as soon as i plug it in, is this needed?

That software isn't needed at all. Once you plug your phone in, if your running windows it will auto launch a file opener, click open to view files, create a new folder and bam you have a portable hard drive. There are also some apps in the market place that make this a little more transparent I really enjoy WiFi transfer then you dont even have to plug the phone in.

I believe you will need the HTC drivers that come from the HTC Sync being installed, after that you can just plug it in you won't need to use the HTC Sync app for file xfer.

You can have the drivers to access your internal storage without having HTC Sync.
