not sure how many saw this news the other day, but according to Pew Research, Android now accounts for 48 percent of tablets sold. this is a huge increase from just 15 percent this time last year. another year, and Android will represent the majority of tablets just as they do the majority of smartphones.

The problem is there aren't enough tablet specific high quality apps. Google really needs to organize the play store like the iOS App Store, has far as how highlighting tablet specific apps and making it easy to find.

Agreed the market needs two parts really.

Some of the Apps are ok for the Nexus 7 or other 7 inch models but on the 10i inch one that dosen't cut it. They need to get devolpers to make more tablet friendly apps.

The Google Play store does a good job at letting you locate apps, but I think it could use some refinements in terms of more search options and a little more granularity with the options that do exist. For example you can search by relevance or popularity but often the searches aren't technically as relevant as they could be, or the popularity results aren't accurate.

I heard rumors that in the upcoming version of Android 4.2 they are going to totally redesign the Play Store maybe they will fix that.

Not really hard considering the amount of different Android tablets on the market. It was always going to take over iOS at some point, just like OS X can never have more total marketshare over Windows. But total OS marketshare isn't what Apple needs, they've proven that.

Yeah mac fans have long used that logic to dismiss windows? market share too. But it doesn't change the fact that half of all tablet users, although they could get an iPad, choose Android instead.

Most of those from what I've seen are amazon tablets.

Most of those tablets are probably not the good ones anyway, such as nexus or the other big names. Instead they are the crappy half baked tablets you get at the pharmacy. Lets be honest, that's what they are.

The Kindle Fire is largely responsible for that shift in market share. However, I imagine that most Kindle Fire users don't even know what Android is. They just like the fact that now they can see their magazines in color.

Who cares? When Android has a big enough marketshare majority, devs will follow the money and develop apps primarily for Android. Just look at how much better the app environment is on the PC in contrast to Macs.

Android already has been winning the market share battle in smart phones, yet most devs still do iOS first and if they support both iOS and Android most devs make more money with iOS. And let's not forget people in the iOS ecosystem spend more.

I can foresee Google taking over the tablet game if the Nexus 7 & current AndroidOS is any indication of future innovation / quality to come

Has anyone mentioned pricing with regard to the growth in the Android market?

Do misunderstand me. I love my Nexus 7 tablet but probably would have bought an Apple iPad if it wasn't so darn expensive. Same with my pcs and notebooks: last time I looked, Apple computers were nearly double in price than a Windows system. But if Apple does bring out a mini iPad, depending on cost, I'd seriously consider getting one.

Other than price, I'm not knowledgeable enough to know why to pick one OS over the other, or if one OS is better from another. However, from what I've read, I wouldn't be interested in the Kindle Fire HD because I'd feel trapped in the Amazon ecosystem.

Not having widgets on the homescreens ALONE would sway me to buy Android over Apple tablets. Not to mention the other personalization/customizing capabilities Android offers that Apple simply does not.

PS I own and love a Macbook Pro so i'm not some Android fanboy.

Android almost doubled their app ecosystem in a year. Apple's has been slowing down.

I care. I don't get as good quality apps as I do on iOS. Some of the apps I have for the nexus aren't optimized for tablets, like they are on iOS. So I get the half baked phone version. And as was said, android Marketshare has already surpassed that of iOS, so where are the developers? why aren't they spending more time on making better apps? I don't know, I'm not a developer, but there is clearly something wrong with the android marketplace.
