I just got my Droid MAXX a few days ago. I've been a long-time BlackBerry user but new to the Android world - so be gentle :)

The startup notification header included something I thought was "Device Manager" or maybe "Motorola Device Manager." One of those "keep track of you phone or wipe it" apps. I started to install and then bailed out, which caused the notice to disappear and now I can't find that app in Google Play, only the Android website. Can anybody help? (Yes, I did search the forum)

Welcome to the forums! All you need to do is login from a desktop computer and follow the prompts. It may have been a one-time message when you were getting started with the device setup and could be re-created if you factory reset then start over.

Was the web version this one: www.android.com/devicemanager

That's the only one I'm aware of. If you want to participate, add the device via that link - hope this helps and Welcome to the forums!

Motorola has a similar feature when you enable it (as well as set up a Motorola I'd, which is basically a gmail account activated on the phone). You get to it from motorola's web site, tap get help, product support, choose the droid Maxx. Then tap sign in using the same google account you used as the Motorola id, then there is a link "lost device".

(There may be a more direct way to get there....)

Anyway, the Moto service adds a few things the android device manager does not have - you can remotely lock the device with a pin, as well as display a message on the lockscreen. And, of course, locate the device, ring the device, and remotely wipe the device, as the android device manager can do.

Thanks for the quick replies. It is the Motorola protection plan thingy that links the phone to the website. No wonder I couldn't find it in the Android forum. I think I got it registered OK. Thanks again.

Last night I experienced hours of grief and torture after installing a protector app that I had on my Rezound. It ended up that my phone got locked, would not unlock and unbeknownst to me, there was a setting in the Motorola device administrators that after 10 password attempts my phone was going to go into a factory reset ... which it ended up doing.

Now, I would like to have a tracker on the phone, but I am looking for the easiest and most simple solution. I went to the Motorola device manager site, but it seems I cannot log into the site with just my gmail address. Can anyone shed some light on how to get signed up for this without losing my phone again. I am usually brave but a bit gun shy at this point.

Thank you for the link. I have bookmarked it.

What I did for the moment was to activate the find feature in my AVG anti virus app. It was very easy and it found my phone in two seconds. I have not activated the device administrator in AVG at this moment. I don't understand it fully and I am not ready for another crisis. It looks from the AVG web page I can wipe the phone from the web with a password. That is really all I need, I think.

I am going to continue following this thread to learn more about device administration. I don't think I had this with my Rezound

Motorola Device manager works I can attest to that. A few weeks ago, when it became available on my Droid Razr Maxx HD, I did some research and turned it on. I then accessed the motorola site, using my gmail id, did a location search and all worked great.
Well, a week later, my Razr took about a 30 foot fall onto concrete. The seidio case kept the razr looking like new, the gorilla glass did not even have a scratch; however, the digitizer under the glass was shattered into a thousand cracks.
Could not get the phone to turn off, could not access anything via the computer (found out a day later it was the cord, and not the phone); so I went to device manager and wiped the phone. Next day I discovered the USB cord I was using was no good, so i connected the Razr and it was wiped.
So device manager works.
And so did my credit card insurance on the phone. They are mailing me a check for 600 bucks, the max payment, this week. And even though I really like the razr maxx HD; I really like this Droid Maxx.
