Android Oreo rollout resumes for Galaxy S8/S8+

Really? I got the December patch a few weeks ago. I think it's crazy that unlocked S8/S8+ owners have to wait so long for an update. This is the main reason why I got an unlocked version.
Me too and I am beginning to regret that decision. I knew Samsung had a somewhat sketchy reputation as far as OS updates were concerned but not being able to crank out the monthly patches on an unlocked device is nuts. Unlocked devices should be the easiest to patch.

I guess the message is "if you want security patches, buy a Pixel".

I really don't get what the hype and frustration is about. Sure Oreo offers some new things, extra or renewed features. But not much different from nougat. And security patches? Sure, good to have them. But do you know how long this monthly update exsist? And do you know how many phones get one per year and after 2 or 3 years nothing more?
The majority of smartphones get a lot lesser support.

It will come eventually, and then you realise there's nothing new under the sun.

Just because every manufacturer fails at updates doesn't make ok though. Every device manufacturer needs to step up their game, not just Samsung.

And to be clear I don't really care about Oreo that much. I ran the Oreo beta on my S8 so I know exactly what I do or don't have.

I want security patches in a somewhat timely manner. I don't think it's unreasonable to expect security updates on an $800.00 phone. On $200 devices I get it, low margin, yada, yada yada.

Patches ARE important. There were several nasty exploits floating around at the end of last year. I really don't think security updates should be trivialized.

Google thinks enough of security updates to issue patches on a monthly basis. That should be all anyone else needs to hear.

Well said, thank you. I'm on the December 1 security path on my "flagship," unlocked, Samsung-bought, US S8. This is a joke. If you're cool with not getting timely security updates, or don't care much about OS updates, good for you, more power to your laid-back self. I'm not cool with it, however, so Pixel 3 is my next Android phone, hope they have a reasonable S8 trade-up.

Guys, a shout out to Nokia here too. I'm a frustrated s8 users too, Nokia have been patching and updating almost as fast as pixel

The camera and phone in general seems much better since the update .My pictures seem sharper, the fingerprint scanner much sharper .Overall it's a win this update.

I'm pretty sure my s8+ will get 2 OS upgrades, just like all our previous Samsung's from S1 and up. My A7 hasn't had a security update from Samsung since the marshmallow upgrade. And guess what? It's safe enough for normal day to day usage.

And I already said that nowadays you want them more frequently.
And guess again? I've had them every month from 20th of April last year on my s8+. With the exception of January.
So I'm sorry you guys live somewhere where you didn't get them. But here in the Netherlands it's as regular as one can get.

That's kind of funny. I love the Netherlands, beautiful country! But it is odd that Samsung would prioritize updates in the Netherlands over the US though. ;-)

I also use an iPhone for work. My iPhone is on iOS 11.2.6, the latest, which I received *the day* it was released. I think what is lost in this discussion is that iOS and Android need updates *all the time* - these modern mobile OS's are filled with security issues, bugs, and the like. It's an ongoing arms race, nothing is every fixed, and nothing is ever done. You might think your phone is fine until you realize it was hacked months before without your knowledge. Great feeling, right?

Samsung releasing one major update PER YEAR is totally unacceptable to me in 2018.

I never said they weren't necessary, neither did I claim priority over other countries, even the US
But some people are annoyed their country is last for the update, or late, and claim to get almost no security update. To a point of believing they won't even get Oreo. I don't know which country they come from though.

Seems to me alot of noise over nothing, from them.
Anyway, I would find it bad if Samsung excluded countries from their security updates, but don't believe this to be the case.

Anyways, from Holland.

PS. I have an iPhone 6+ for work also.

I understand you never said any of that specifically, I was just explaining my point of view.

I just think Samsung, with all the revenue they get from mobile devices should be able to up their game when it comes to security patches. We as a people are moving towards having all our data stored on our devices and our devices need to be as secure as possible to fend off the marauding horde that are coming for our data.

Agreed

Yeah as an ex-Windows Phone user I've been looking at Nokia. If they sold a version that worked on Verizon I would be interested. I'm on T-Mo for the time being but I'm not yet convinced that I won't go back to Verizon.

They do look good though.

I can't seem to get rid of the icon frames since updating to Oreo. Gmail is one that keeps the white frame no matter what I change the setting to.
