Android Police's 2018 Smartphone of the Year is the OnePlus 6T

6t is such an amazing phone. I haven't found 1 gripe yet.

I have a couple but I generally find something. Overall I'm still happy. Picked up my pixel 2 the other day and OMG IDK how I used that thing for so long with its huge forhead and chin and tiny screen.

As for the 6T my biggest issue is that once in awhile the phone will be ringing but the screen won't wake and I miss calls.

LOL, I know how you feel picking up the Pixel 2. I went digging around an old catch-all drawer the other day and came across my HTC Titan Windows Phone. I thought it was so huuuge back then with it's 4.7 inch screen. (Some reviewers marked the size of the phone as a con!)

It looks so small now compared to he 6T.

I've never had that issue, but I do get phantom notifications when in vibrate mode. This phone seems to vibrate alert for every little thing going on in the background. Drove me crazy for the first few weeks, but I guess I'm getting used to it because I don't notice it much anymore.

Yeah, I've gradually turned notifications off for certain apps that I don't need to know every little thing. I still miss Oreo, you could actually adjust notifications to say I want the notification but not on the lockscreen and not on vibrate for each app.

Who said you can't do that for each app now? That is still available on Android 9. Notification settings specific for each app.

I cannot find where to turn off lock screen notifications on a per app basis, you can either show all notification content, hide sensitive content, or don't show notifications at all in the lock screen preferences. This happens currently on my 6T, Pixel 2 did it when it got Pie also. I get notifications on the lockscreen and ambient display for everything unless I turn off notifications completely for that app. Used to be, at least in oreo on the pixel 2 I could change lock screen notifications on a per app basis.

Maybe I'm missing it, or not remembering right, but I'm pretty sure I could set apps to give me a silent notification only in the notification bar, not on the lock screen, aod or ambient display and no vibration or sound. Now its either they are on throughout all layers or none on Pie. Again, maybe I just haven't found it but I really liked that, you could prevent apps buzzing like crazy and lighting up your screen but they would still be there when you unlocked the phone.

I can understand the small screen thing too. I have an iPhone 5s I use as a work phone and that is just painful. I am hoping to find a newer iPhone 6s Plus or something cheap to use instead of it.

Here you go.

Go to Settings then Apps & Notifications.

You will see the list of your installed apps. I am going to use Messages app for an example.

Click on Messages app
The Click on Notifications (you should see a list of notification types, in this case, Default, Others, and 911.

Click on Default to control how default notifications for this app behaves.
Once clicked, look for Behavior and On lock screen options. These 2 will allow you to customize notifications for Messages app. Change them as you see fit.

Cheers!

Got it thanks. However that has to be the most misleading setup I've ever seen LOL. Why would you put a checkbox there? The check box led me to believe it was just a toggle and not another set of menus buried in there. I swear software developers change stuff just for the sake of change.

Hahaha, ya, check check box allow you to just turn it off. Clicking to the left takes you to more options lol

They should have put a settings/gear icon next to it for people to click on to know that there are settings behind those options. That would seem more intuitive for the average user to see and realize that there are more options available to them.

Link to articles below. Fully agree. Along my 6T, I have a Note 9. But for the last 10 days, my daily driver been 6T. OOS makes this phone such a pleasure to use. I think OnePlus deserves credit here.

Like you, I also have the Note 9. I also have the Pixel 2 xl, which I'm currently switching back and forth with to decide which one I prefer as my note 9 alternate (still in return window with OP6T). It's kinda tough to not notice the drop-off in camera quality though, even with the g cam apk. It's proving to be a difficult decision whether or not to stay with the OP6T or Pixel 2 xl just because of the camera discrepancy. Especially with having the Note 9, I've gotten kinda spoiled with the quality of photos/videos I've taken. Other than the camera I'm really enjoying the OP6T though

Agree. 1+ need to up their game in the camera department. I am thinking about getting a Pixel 3 just because of the camera quality. But will probably wait couple more months to get a used one on Craiglist for $400 or so. Never again paying pig money for phones. I am done.

I saw an article yesterday and S10 is rumored to cost $1000 and S10+ north of $1200. I can only imagine what a Note 10 going to cost. NO WAY.

6T is a mercy when it comes to cost. I am very happy with it. So for now, staying put.

I bought another midnight black, 8gb version from Swappa yesterday and sold my Pixel 2 XL. I'll be switching back and forth between this and my Note 9 as I see fit.

I am picking up a Pixel 2 xl Panda Monday for a steal.

I do remember you returning 6T and keeping 2xl. Why are you changing your mind??

Because I'm crazy lol But in all seriousness, I put my SIM in the 2 XL the other night and after a couple weeks looking at the Note 9 screen, I can't use the 2 XL. Plus, I felt like the 6T was perfect when I had it save for the lack of WiFi calling on Verizon. I'm just going to hold out for Verizon to get it figured out because it's SUCH a good device.

I love my 6T. I am getting the 2 XL 128 gb Panda from a friend for $300. I don't know but I thought I can get it to see what's up with all the hype around the Camera.

I have a feeling I won't like it as much as I like my 6T. But for $300, I have a hard time passing that up.

300 is a definite steal. I sold my Panda, 128GB for 430 on Swappa.

6t is an awesome phone. Only gripe is that I take a lot of photos of my kids and the camera struggles with action photos (kids playing sports), something my Pixel 2 did not.

I got me a new 3XL on Swappa for 600 (whatta deal!!!).... I'll definitely use both for awhile and see how it turns out....
Picked up a Pixel 2 XL 128gb Panda like new condition from a friend for $300. Could not say no to that.

Like you, have 2 small kids and picture quality is top priority. I think 6T is superior to 2 XL in many ways except for the camera. That camera is great on 2 XL.

I will be using it for the next few months and will wait for 3 XL prices to fall more before I pull the trigger on one.
