OK please forgive me but you can tell from my post count I'm new at all this Android stuff (but love it).

Why can't a ROM utlity program be made for a custom rom? Meaning... a new guy like me wants to root his phone with one of the custom ROM's some of you wizards have made. Giving me a rooted phone AND a custom ROM.

All I would have to do is download the file and start the ROM Utility program, plug in my phone via USB and chose my Custom ROM.

Reason I ask this probable stupid question is. I followed the instructions to the letter from both this site and the xda site. Read the instructions 4 to 5 times and then jump in and rooted my EVO. The rooting went well but when I followed the instructions on installing the update.zip file the phone was very unstable. I got scared I screwed up my phone so I went back to the factory FLASH I found on the xda developer website.

The Factory RUU had the HTC ROM Utility and this was a piece o cake going back to full stock.

Sorry if I'm being really dumb here but I to start somewhere. Thank you all!!!

there used to be somthing for the droid that would do that but that was back to the 2.01 firmware.

what i don't like about those apps or programs is they do the work for you but it eliminates the process of learning how to do it if manually. it took me about a month-month and half to get a good understanding about it. would it be easier? probably. would you know what to do if you got stuck in a boot loop or you couldn't get past the opening screen? who knows but there is more going against you being able to figure it out to fix it by not knowing how it was installed from the beginning.

i know this response isn't really helpful. i am sure somebody will post a great tutorial to help you out. everybody here (well most people here) are very helpful and will go out of there way to help out others. i would help but i own a droid and the process probably isnt the same. but i just wanted to explain to you why those kind of apps/programs are not always the best ways to do this kind of stuff. think of it like doing work on a car. you can always drop it off at a shop to have a super charger, cold air intake etc... done to it. if somthing breaks then you have to bring it here to get fixed but if you know how to do it yourself then you could fix it without a problem and save you self a lot of time and stress. im just saying this because you have no idea how many times i thought i bricked my phone because i didnt know what to do when the app didn't work.

i wish you the best of luck man.

Thank You Brett your answer actually makes perfect sense. I do want to learn how to do the things you guys do to some degree so I perfectly understand. Been reading for a month and if wasn't for this site and the xda-developers site I would not have been able to return my phone to factory settings, so I am learning!!!

seeing as i don't really know about the EVO rooting process i will see if sombody posts explaining how to go about it. if they don't by tomorrow afternoon ill look around and try to find good instructions.

also check youtube, they will usually have a good instructional video explaining how to root it. if all else fails and nobody posts anything, ill try to help. also if i forget just send me a PM as a reminder

Just a little confused.

Are you needing to know how to flash a custom ROM, root, or something like that?

Be glad to help.

I think he is looking for a site or instructions that will explain how to root the evo buy somewhat simplified.

Do you think it would be beneficial/worth making a very easy root guide for the EVO? One for people such as him can follow with ease?

Toast Ive read your instructions on the xda site and as good as they are I was looking for a RUU that would connect via the USB. A utility that would basically do all the work for me! The steps to root the phone and to install the new flash...no what I mean?

I don't mind continuing to read and try again. I read all of the post by Bliss and it is very step by step. I got the phone rooted and when I did the step by step on the shipped ROM using the update.zip file the recovery went well but the phone was completly unstable. I was having SDcard issues and Exchange mail issues. When I tried to open the HTC music app it was force close and basically freeze up.

I then found the factory RUU that football posted with the .6 update and just ran the .zip file. It opened in an HTC Android update wizard and totaly reflashed my phone with it hooked up to the USB cable. This went VERY easy and the phone is perfect now back to stock ( but im not rooted). The is the file Iam talking about. RUU_Supersonic_1.32.651.6_Radio_1.39.00.05.31_release_171253_signed

First, me (t0ast3d) and Toastcfh over at XDA ARE NOT THE SAME PEOPLE (just saying)

and not if you want full root, you have to do it manually.

Since Toast (XDA) are not the same people, maybe I could try to create a simplified one (depending if Brett thinks it's a good idea to make one)

Sure sounds good to me. I'd make one but don't have an evo if is well received I'll sticky it

OHHHHHHHHHHHHHH So sorry for the confusion on my part!! Well the Toast guy at the xda site has a real good write up but it does talk over my head a bit. If you could write a step by step that I'm sure would be very helpful.

What I am looking for is just to have the factory ROM with it rooted so I can work the hotspot and the teathering function. Being a new guy I kind of like the HTC UI (for now) and am fine with it.

Thanks again for all the responses.

Yes, I know him, and no problem

Here's a thread I just made

http://forum.androidcentral.com/htc...ewb-guide-how-root-recovery-roms-windows.html

If you just want the stock rooted ROM, just stop at the "Replacing your recovery image"

Your last step will be doing a nandroid restore explained in the thread, hope this helps man.
