Android Town - social community application

@Foxman: I'm sorry you were misled. I fixed both the description on the webpage and on the Android Market.

@ock: one of the things I wish to implement in the next few days. Tomorrow is probably gonna be the first update (which won't contain your option), but the one after that should be the one with the option integrated.

Oh, thanks! I really don't want you to think that I'm mad at you or anything, because I couldn't find the 1.6 info. It's just that I think it's better to be clear about stuff like this, especially as your userbase grows. I'm sorry if you thought I was angry! I know that 1.5 is kinda old now, but there are still many of us out there. I guess I'll try this out once I'm updated, whenever that will be (come on, HTC...). But thanks for the quick reply!

No problem. Your attention to feedback and suggestions is great though. Keep up the good work.

Update - My fc issues cleared up once my GPS issues went away. I can see a handful of users near me. And as I suspected, its a sausage fest.

At the moment, there's a bug that's preventing the females to show up. It'll be cleared today most likely :) I think we have around 40 girls registered that are showing up as guys.

Wouldnt surprise me if most females register as males, and only relay their screen name to their friends for safety sake.

What do the different colors mean? Im blue, my coworker was red, then gray, and there are people on the east coast that are yellow, red, or gray.

Maybe the description of the colors should be in the app. I found it on the website. If I remember right:
Blue - You.
Green - Logged in within the last hour
Orange - Between and 1 and 3 hours ago
Red - 3 to 6 hours ago
Gray - 6+ hours ago.

And before I sound like a creepy cyber stalker, my joke was more about how tech tends to lean towards guys and less about "I want my phone to get me some."

Although it would be awesome if it did.

Yes, the colors are exactly that. The help in the update will be much more substantial in the application itself.

Thanks, And I agree. I like the idea of the sales pitch. Standing on the Subway deck in Chicago, and ask someone if they saw the game today as you already know they are a cubs fan.

think about how much easier life would be if you were out in the bar, saw a 10 with her droid, and checked android town, and sure enough she is there. You could send a message from across the bar so that you dont have to worry about getting the crap kicked out of you by her BF that you failed to notice when if you would have had to walk over to hit on her:eek::rolleyes:;)

@nvr2nd: always, besides...i'm having fun developing this

@ock: do you have any suggestions how to choose your location manually? Or did you just have a switch in mind, which would automatically update the location or not. Still...with only a switch you'd still need to have one location "memorized" to always show you there.

If any of you have any suggestions how to implement this in the simplest manner for the user, do say.

Thanks

Pretty much, I think when you pull up the app, there should be an "Update Location" button (maybe shrink the dropdown for distance and put it on the left or right side, or put it above or beneath it) that then posts your current location. and until you hit that, your location stays wherever it was that you last updated (sort of like the now popular "check-in" system). That way, if I want to see who uses the app within a 10 mile radius of my house, I can check without it posting the GPS location of my house for the world to see (I know it doesn't label it as my house or anything. But a privacy concern nonetheless).

I like this idea of using a check in button. So the app can be opened without having to update location right away.

Been trying it out and it forceclosing alot!! It does it right when I open the app and when I try to zoom out on the map. The "My Location" button dont do anything either.
Using Moto-Droid

Would be great if you could choose "Miles" or "Kilometers"

Be able to navigate from your location to someone on your friends list.

I do like it, has lots of potential. Great work so far!!

Tackleberry - I was having the exact same issue. Are you also having GPS issues? My Google Maps was unable to give me my location when I was having the same fc issue as you. Both started working at the same time.

@Tackleberry: the force close issue does seem to be connected to GPS lock somehow, although I can't reproduce it myself. If there's anyway you can send me a log of what's going on when it force closes it would be a lot of help.

There's an app on the Market called Log Collector, that enables you to send a log to someone's mail address. So if you install that...use Android Town until it force closes and then use Log Collector to send the log to bostjan.brumen@gmail.com it would do a lot to help with the stability of the app.

I installed the app, got registered and cranked it up. It seemed to be ok for a short while, but then it crashed. Any launch after that the app crashed as soon as I touched the map. I uninstalled and reinstalled with the same thing. I sent the log to ya.

Little update

Been using this on both a Hero and an N1, without any issues. On the Hero it gets a little sluggish with the radius set to 25000km lol.

You sir, have a winner on your hands.

My wife says the idea of a "check in log" so you could see other users that may have been in your area before you would be an excellent upgrade, and worth paying for.

Thanks for the log Kage, it really will help. There's an update coming tomorrow that probably will help with some speed issues.

Looks neat, but limited user base in my area. Seems like it could grow into a BBM replacement with enough users.

Update posted on the market. Still not showing if I refresh but I'm sure it'll come up soon:

Changelog:
- stabilized a lot of the areas of the app (thanks to Kage's log; think I got that bug fixed)
- speed issues improved
- less bandwith used
- search option added in the menu (lets you search for users by username, age, sex in a user submitted radius (if left empty the main radius is used))
- clear search button next to radius spinner; lets you clear search results and restore original state
- you can long click a notification now and add a user to your friends or show him on the map (show location is a bit buggy, since if you then return to the original map it won't redraw...you have to exit and reenter app)

You will need to relog (not register, just login) though since the DB was altered a bit.
