Android version 6.0.1... Is it still safe to use?

My device is at August security patch from last year which, I was wondering if it's still safe to use this tablet.

Or do I need to flash the device with custom ROM for security reason?

All you have to worry about is not installing from outside of Play and giving absurd permissions to apps.
