Android VPN to PC?

I've setup a VPN on my PC and have successfully connected to it on my Android device (Galaxy S5). I was under the assumption that once I did, I would have access to my computers files, and gain the ability to remote into my PC's desktop. Though, when trying to RDP into the ip of my PC, it can't find it. In fact, I can't even find any of my PC files on my Android. I checked my network, and there doesn't seem to be anything on it. I know I'm connected to my VPN, as it shows a connection on both my Android and my PC. Do I have a misunderstanding of how VPN works? Are there additional steps that I need to take?
