Androind requiring "Additional security" to unlock the phone and not recognising the correct pattern

have tried to unlock my phone with my fingerprint and suddenly I was required to enter my pattern to unlock the phone.

The problem is:
1) I never set the phone to require two security steps to unlock the phone. It should have happened because of an automatic, and unwanted, update that it asked for something that the phone owner did not set up without asking for permission to do it.
2) It does not recognise the correct pattern either!!!! I have not forgotten the pattern. I have been using the same pattern since I bought the Pixel 2 four years ago and I have never changed it, I still use it in the new Pixel 6. It is not recognised by the phone now.

How can I unlock my phone now without a hard reset that would destroy all my data? No, I do not back up the data in the cloud. I do not like my data leaving my phone.

Why does Google do these annoying things that do NOT increase security as they are unexpected and unwanted? It should advise the owners to do things only.

BTW, my phone is a Pixel 6 Pro.

Thank you for your help.

That seems odd, since you have to have a pattern/password set up before you can register a fingerprint.

No clue here, is Google any help beyond "Do a factory reset."?

There seems to be a requirement that you enter your pattern/password every 72 hours now, and the fingerprint will be disabled until you do so.

You did set it up, because you can't set up a fingerprint without a pattern, PIN or password.

Now, if you keep entering the wrong pattern, you'll eventually get a "forgot pattern"prompt. This will allow you to unlock your phone with your Google account username and password.

I agree with both of you .

Re: Androind requiring "Additional security" to unlock the phone and not recognising the correct pat

Welcome to Android Central! Pretty much any Android phone will periodically ask you to enter the backup PIN/password/pattern if you use the fingerprint sensor as your main unlock method. This is for increased security because fingerprint actually isn't as secure as a good password. The Pixel 6 asks for the backup PIN/password/pattern more frequently than other phones I've had -- I'm not sure if that's an Android 12 thing, a Pixel 6 thing, or a glitch. But regardless, you'll encounter this behavior no matter which phone you use.

Are you able to boot into Safe Mode? https://support.google.com/pixelphone/answer/2852139?hl=en
