I'm ashamed to admit it, but... I am actually on board with this theory. I'll turn in my skeptic card as I exit the forum. :p

Well the kitkat android guy is doing the John Travolta "Saturday Night Fever" pose. That movie was released Dec 16, 1977. So we either have to wait another 2 months for the release, or Google invented a time machine and the release is in '77.

It's been like this every year since the Galaxy Nexus with me. I had the first two Nexus phones, but after they were released. Since then I've been playing the waiting & guessing game like everyone else. It's cool to see a new batch of people waiting on the Nexus. I get a nexus phone every year and am excited for this next one again.

So I guess my question is, does Google present all these "leaks" on their own/allow them to happen or are they really this bad at keeping their new device under wraps until its launch? We pretty much already know almost everything about the phone. Do they do it to create buzz or can they just not contain the leaks? Anyone?

Probably a combination of both.

Welp, they kept the name KitKat for 4.4 a secret until they personally released it. I'm sure if they really wanted to keep the phone under wraps, they could. Car companies do it by camoflauging the cars, even when driving on public roads. No reason Google couldn't make it's testers put cases on the prototypes until it's release.

The funny thing is that Android seems to be heavily hinting at the release of 4.4 sometime in the next few days/weeks, but people keep 'finding' (making up) ways to prove that its the Nexus 5 release as well. Of course, the Google Play slip might make this more of a reality, but who knows.

Google almost always has released a new device with new major android version releases. There's no reason to think this one would be any different. Why have two press conferences for releases that would be so close to one another? It just makes more sense to launch both at once, even if one or the other isn't due to actually release for a month or so....and this actually is usually the case. they uaually release the device a little after the android update.

27th Oct according to latest KitKat photo (conspiracy theory) lol 27 KitKat Androids?
