Hello, my name is Rob. I am using the same username I have at PreCentral and webOSroundup forums. I've been an owner of a Sprint Palm Pre since June of 2009. As you can imagine, it's getting a little long in the tooth. With the recent news I'm sure you all have seen, it's time for me to move on to a different phone OS now that the Pre3 is not coming out.

I looked at WP7, but it doesn't offer WiFi tethering. Android does, I assume, through rooting. I need WiFi tethering to provide Internet to my HP DeadPad when I'm out and about and on the go. I am sticking with Sprint as they are the cheapest carrier for me when I take into account all of the discounts.

The Android phones I am specifically looking at are the Motorola Photon and the HTC EVO 3D. I have read in a couple of places that a new Samsung Epic and a new Google Nexus S are on their way to Sprint "soon". I really don't know much of anything about Android, but I do know it's the platform I am reluctantly migrating to.

My main concerns are hardware quality and apps that do what I want. I don't care about Facebook, Twitter, or social networking integration. I don't care about buying music or listening to music. I do listen to podcasts on my Pre and TouchPad, so I need an Android device that will play mp3s. (I assume all do.) I don't care about movies or video or YouTube. I don't care about games. I'm more of a business type of user. I would like to know that my phone will continue to receive Android OS updates for at least the next year, maybe year and a half. Palm abandoned the Pre after just one year and that really put a bad taste in my mouth regarding long-term OS support.

I do care about Gmail compatibility, Google Calendar, tasks management (Toodledo or Google Tasks), ability to take notes (Simplenote or Google Docs), Google Docs integration, mp3 playback, LastPass, Google Reader integration, TuneIn by RadioTime, ZumoDrive support, and WiFi tethering.

I will check out the Photon and EVO 3D forums as there are already users there reporting on their experiences. I wonder if I should wait for the new Epic or Nexus? My Pre really is on its last legs. It gets to 20% battery after a 45 minute phone call and it also likes to randomly shut itself off when the screen is not on. Nice, huh?

You'll be seeing a lot more of me in the months to come, I'm sure. Usually I am not nearly as long-winded as I am in this initial post. I hope you'll take care of this webOS refugee, I'm pretty bruised up and depressed.
