Anti-Samsung Rant By Senior Editor of Apple User Website

market share is important for apple content though

It's important. But the numbers clearly show that even though Apple is behind, they're still doing record profit.

Cue the "Apple is expensive", "Apple Tax", and "Apple overcharges" posts.

People that buy into the iOS ecosystem clearly spend more money within that ecosystem.

Profits are important just as anything else, but in terms of this technology, market share has to show precedent. Yea its great to make a ton of money, but if that money is coming from the same small group of people who are forced to by your newest products once a year because you refuse to give them any "upgrade" avenue, then in the grand scheme of consumer electronics, your product isn't worth much.

Market share is the important factor here because that's what shows what consumers are buying. Much, much more important than net profit. I guarantee that the company economists would tell you the same exact thing. They (along with most companies) want their products in as many hands as possible. And as of right now, Android is doing that better than anyone.

The bottom line is obviously important to any company, but the point you pointed out is being worn out by fans of Apple. Who cares how much money they are making if its just the same, relatively small group of people purchasing their products over and over. Profit is a moot point.

yeah android is doin better than iOs but if u think of apple as purely a handset manufacturer.. theyre doing very well

ITT: Watch as Rene cries more about Apple not being top dog anymore. You really tried hard to find products that looked similar, out of the dozens and dozens of products that they've made, even if they don't function in a similar way. Pathetic, desperate and sad. I'll be LOLing in a couple years when iOS is in the same place that palm is now.

I commented on that article:

Samsung couldn't have copied Apple with all the features iOS doesn't have such as drag and drop media, widgets, SD card support, removable battery, setting your favorite apps as default such as browser, keyboard, and camera apps, true multitasking and not just freezing apps, NFC, side loading applications. I can go on and on. Samsung/Android has more features than iOS. In fact the New iPad and the iPhone 4S only has a .3 megapixel front facing camera- I will stop!

Not sure what you mean by no "upgrade" avenue.

Apple usually releases one phone and one tablet per year. I agree with this strategy and I hate that there are so many different models of Android phones. While still having choice, Android OEMs would love to scale down and be more like Apple with less devices. Samsung and the S III is a great example of this.

The 3GS is getting iOS 6. And it'll get it the same day as all of the other devices getting iOS 6. There are many devices that still don't have Ice Cream Sandwich.

Not that it matters much- as long as you can run the apps that you need to run on your device.

Ecosystem is just as important as market share - if not more important, in my opinion. And the more one invests in an ecosystem, the harder it is for one to leave that ecosystem. Those in the iOS ecosystem invest more and the app downloads, app profits, and accessories market vs their Android counterparts reflect that.

Sure surveys and whatnot claim that Apple is getting stale. There are tons of new S III owners on this site that are converts from iOS. But every new iPhone doubles the sales of the previous model iPhone (I think I read that somewhere, but I'm on my phone so I'm too lazy to check). Until that trend starts to reverse along with profits sharply declining, it's really silly to say that Apple is "scared" of or "fears" Android.

That's nice but those aren't the features Apple is suing Samsung over.

Apple is gaining sales, but losing market share. They used to be top dog and are no longer. The youth market is losing interest in the iphone, down 35+% from 2010 according to 3 independent polls. The same thing happened with windows vs Apple. They are definitely running scared.

Its pretty much had the exact same device "reinvented" once a year since its inception. And their "new" releases of software is humorous to say the least. They are reaching their saturation point, and its definitively starting to show.

And those are just polls. Until there are actual sales numbers to back that up, they really don't mean much.

Prediction: new iPhone sets new Apple sales records for phones.

Prediction: new iPhone is a top seller for all carriers.

In the phone and tablet space, there's a reason why HTC is dying, Motorola is laying off people, LG continues to be irrelevant. They can't make money off of Android.

Again - I'm a fan of Android. I want Android to succeed. And it seems like the way for Android to succeed is to be more like Apple's approach. Less hardware (HTC focusing on the One series, Motorola laying people off and focusing on less but better phones, Samsung launching the S III globally with little changes physically). Thriving ecosystem (app revenue, third party accessories). Vertical integration (the Nexus line, Google buying Motorola).

The polls are based upon sales. Motorola can't cake money because of Samsung's dominance. If less phones meant success, HTC would be kind of the hill. Oh, but wait. It's not.

look at great manufacturers like Zte or Huawei though, theyr doin pretty well sellin cheap mid-range android phones and having a shot at cheap high-end. i dont think samsung are strangling competition. ive always bought cheaper phones and modded them but my fiance bought me the s3 and i do love it

My 2 cents: I generally think Rene Ritchie is spot on with most of his observations, and I agree with parts of his assessment here except for his comparison of the S3 to the Pre. I get that they both did the "nature" thing, but I really don't think Samsung was ripping off anything palm did.

As for Samsung and Apple, I don't know how anyone could look at the original Galaxy and not see what a blatant copy it was of the iPhone. (only an android fanboy could not see something so obvious :)) That said, I do think Samsung has gone in their own direction as the Galaxy series has evolved. With the S3 I think they had a pretty original design and the software is getting less and less iOS-like. (although I WAS surprised at his comparison of S-voice to Siri - I didn't realize how close those were)

Everything I read in that rant is basically the pot calling the kettle black. Apple feels that it is ok for them to copy previous art and design and then bribe the patent office to get a patent on it, but as soon as they feel threatened, they sue. The writer said something to the effect that Samsung needed to innovate not copy. Well Apple you better look in the mirror because every time you point a finger at someone else, there are more fingers pointing back to you!

very true mate. maybe they dont copy by law definitions but they do moraly and i hope that comes back and bites them
