For the most part, if your phone is not rooted and you're not sideloading (installing apps from unknown sources), you really do not have anything to worry about. However, better safe than sorry. All it takes is that one day an app makes it past Google scrutiny and infects everyone who clicks install before it gets pulled from the Play Store. Some antivirus apps include location and remote locking features. It's best to read their description and get one that's multi-purpose to cut down on installing extra apps. Are anti virus apps a real need for android phones ? I have very less knowledge and so i am asking. If i stick to obly Play Store apps and dont wonder into dark websites, am i not safe ?
But yes, the other features of an anti virus app, tracker, remote locker, remote wipe, etc....are more prominent features of anti virus app.....right ? Please advive me...
Thanks.

ADM (Android Device Manager), Lookout, Seekdroid (pure track/wipe) & Best Buy Geek Squad (track/wipe/diagnostics) all work as advertised from personal experience. You just have to be sure to grant them administrative permissions. One bonus I can confirm is that ADM will queue commands issued to the phone. So if it's off, once it comes on, it will alarm/lock automatically. I haven't tried this yet with the others. And one thing I like about GeekSquad's is that it can activate the cameras and take pictures but you have to be using their insurance to use the app (which I am).I was wondering if it was necessary also...I wonder how well the locate and wipe features on the apps actually work, but of course I haven't tested it out myself haha

It's better to have it and not need it than to need it and not have it. Malicious apps make it into the Play Store from time to time. It's a small price to pay for a piece of mind that I'm protected at all times. Apps aren't the only thing you have to worry about. Since we have NFC, cloud services, email, etc., which we can share files with everybody, who's to say those docs/files aren't infected? I use Kaspersky.
No, it's a huge price to pay. Anti-Virus apps are resource heavy and are un-necessary. Malware gets into the playstore in apps made by shafy developers and are pretty easy too spot. If you download apps from trusted developers and check app permissions (a wallpaper app shouldn't have access to your messages) I guarantee you will not pick up malware from the Play Store. If you go and pirate apps, you deserve to get malware.

lol a huge price to pay? What are you, 12, and don't have any source of income except maybe some allowance from Mommy and Daddy? We own smartphones that cost hundreds of dollars but it's a huge price to pay for an app? That's a good one. You can't guarantee anything. Do you personally know every developer in the Play Store? I see no performance drop on my S4. It's always lagged even before I installed an AV app. lol
You clearly misunderstood what I was saying in regards to the price. The price is the deterioation in performance when an antivirus app is not necessary.
Since you clearly don't know and continue too spew non sense, Google has a built in safety measure that "verifies" all apps installed on your phone for malware and they also have added missing device functionalitiy so you have no reason too install an anti virus app. That is of course unless you're paranoid that someone is going too steal your high and mighty "income" and feel the need too protect yourself by an app created by some developer you don't know.
Good one, call me 12 yet you use the term "lol".

I did understand which is why I stated my S4 lags before and after I installed an AV app. I used "lol" because I laughed out loud and thought I could just save time by typing the whole thing out. So are you 100% certain that it is impossible to get infected as long as we install apps only from the Play Store?
I am 99.9% sure that you will not be infected if you correctly follow the safety measures in place and think before downloading.
