Paying for antivirus apps is not something I like, there are free ones out there that do the same or better.

Even in google play store there are apps that get passed anti virus checks. Not having anti virus on your phone is like never using a condom.

Perhaps however these are often abstract / unknown apps that anyone with an ounce of sense would avoid.

Also, the total number of infected apps expressed as a percentage is likely to be miniscule.

I've been running Android since 2010 (2.1+) and have never had malware issues, I've also never installed AV software.

Also, if people are going to use AV apps I'd recommend a single one as multiple AV apps running simultaneously are likely to be competing for resources / system access which will affect your device performance.

Thing is, android has become more virus prone as much as PC's have the past year or so. Read an article on BBC news about it. I just don't want to have to reset my phone if I get one so just have anti virus installed I do

It's always best to have an AV installed on your Android device even if you're not rooted or only downloading apps from the Google Play Store. A lot of rogue/malicious apps get posted before they are checked and taken down.

I also use CM Security. Been using it for a few days now after switching from Avast. I like how CM Security offers more features for FREE and is more lightweight. It also is able to catch some stuff that Avast missed.

How many people do you know that have ever suffered the effects of a malware infected Android device?

I don't know many but I suffered last week from a dodgy app. Popups on screen and slowing down and avast picked it up

That's because you downloaded a dodgy app.

Where did you download the app from?

The play store. Hardest game ever. Can't trust the play store, what can you trust

Because of the open system of Android, dodgy apps can get posted on the Play Store before it gets checked and taken down. That's why its always a good idea to have an AV installed on your device.

I would not consider "popups" a virus nor malware. They are ads, that the developer has chosen to include in their app , however annoying and deceptive it may be. If you read the reviews on the Playstore before downloading they usually will indicate as much. Also, in your reference to android being "virus prone", I have yet to see this nor know anyone affected by it. I have been with Android since the beginning and have never had a virus or malware. So personally I forgo the AV, I do not feel it necessary at this time; Just my 2 cents.
:p

Or wait until there are at least a few hundred downloads, and the app has been on Play for at least a couple of weeks, so you know it's been scanned.

There have been a VERY few apps on the play store with real malware, but most of the instances of Android malware have come from Chinese and Russian app sources.

I was in St Lucia using the hotels WiFi for calls (using Google Voice). I also had my Nexus 7 for news and email. While sitting in a soft chair with a drink in my hand I did a virus check. The Nexus 7 was infected..... Don't be so sure that "Only using the Play store, you'll not need a protection program". The world is full of potential phone threats. Probably, a guy or gal at a nearby table, with a drink in their hand was reading my computer.

No Android antivirus protects against something like that, and the exact same thing would happen if you were using an iPad or iPhone too. If you use public wifi like that there's a chance someone could spy on you. Hotel wifi is notoriously unsafe.
