Does anyone think we need an antivirus app on here? I have always used the free Avast anti virus, but it never found anything other than telling me to delete my call logs for best security. Just wondered what others thought. I haven't put it on my Note yet.

I read awhile ago (CNET I believe) that your Android phone does not need A/V software. The last time I did install some software (HTC EVO Shift) it reeked havoc on my phone.

For device protection, I like Lookout. I have used it since it was released over on XDA. it offers some nice features.

There's no need for antivirus on Android, but it simply offers some people a peace of mind that they have an extra layer of "protection" on their phone. Unfortunately this also often leads to a false sense of security as well.

So long as you're downloading reputable apps from Google Play, leaving the default security features turned on in the settings and not clicking on shady links or visiting bad websites, there's nothing that can infect or harm your phone. In many cases, an antivirus can't save you from these types of attacks, either, since they're things that you do — not something that randomly/accidentally happens without your knowledge.

I use Norton on my computer and it comes with mobile phone protection so I've been using it on my last 2 phones, Blackberry Z30 and S7Edge and now on my Note 8.

Verizon has an app called Security & Privacy(a McAfee product) that is free when used on one device. It has Security - protection from malware and viruses- it scans your apps, messages and files; Privacy- scans apps and tracks and alerts you about how much personal information they can access and share; Web Security - protection from malicious web sites; Wi-Fi Security- identitifies unsecured networks and detects and alerts any ARP(Address Resolution Protocol) spoofing attacks. It's easy to use and set up. With all the time I spend on the phone's internet (I rarely use my surface pro anymore) browsing, shopping etc. it gives me some piece of mind.
