Any chance of a non-root Wifi Tether?

I was showing off my iPad to some friends and one of my buddies who has a winmobile phone wanted to see how the web responded so he ran an app that turned his phone into a hotspot and it worked really well.

From what I gather the only way to do this currently on my Droid is to root your phone and then use something like Barnicle or the like. Anyone know if someone is working on an app that would do it natively?
