Any difference in cameras?

I'm not talking a out the dual setup. I know that's different over the v10 . but just main camera shots? The v10 uses the same camera as the g4 just with more controls. I knew this buying the v10. And was happy. As expected shots were identical to my g4 (which is to say they were great). My understand is that the LG g5 simply reused the same camera. And also my understanding is that the v20 uses the same camera as the g5. Am I correct in assuming that photo quality (ignoring the wide angle setup) on the v20 is going to be identical to my old g4 and current v10? Not that it's a bad camera, but I am a little jealous of the far nicer setup Samsung has in the note. Little disappointing that the new v20 simply recycles camera from a early 2015 device.

For one I think they improved the focus by adding a third phase of focus detection. As far as the sensor itself, it may be an all new one. To my knowledge the G4, G5 and V10 all shot 16:9 at 16mp natively. The V20 shoots at 4:3 at 16mp natively and cropping to a 16:9 aspect ratio reduces the mp to 9 I believe. So we may be looking at a new sensor with a difference in focal length is what I'm guessing from that one fact. LG didn't divulge that information which I wish they would have. The big thing for me is did they tighten up their optical image stabilization for walking and foot falls. The OIS is perfectly smooth for panning but is super aggressive at times for movement from place to place. I want to see Steady Record 2.0 in a final production unit. The pre release units had the same aggressive, artificial stabilization issues from the past.

As long as it focuses quickly, especially in low light I'll be happy. My g4 and v10 would struggle in low light without going into manual mode. I like the "pro" camera feel you can get with the v20, but the s7 edge spoiled me by having such a solid auto mode. Even in low light, just double tap the home button and snap a picture and you have a really good picture.

Yeah gotta give it to Samsung for their camera tech the last couple years. Their camera is super fast to take photos as well. Faster than LG by a little but that's cause I shoot mostly in manual RAW. The simple and auto modes are much quicker.

These guys are being overly negative in my opinion. LG has some of the nicest cameras on the market and are only off in auto mode by a few small margins. Where the improvements need to come is in OIS when it comes to walking. I feel like if they fix that they will have the complete experience. I mean it's excellent 16mp quality with the most robust manual mode you can find on any phone. What more do you want really? For me, maybe a new larger sensor but that's about it.

Agreed. I felt at one point they were knocking the V20 not because it had a bad camera but because of little improvements over the G4.

The V10 was Juan's favorite phone of 2015 due to its audio performance and the plethora of camera controls, especially for video. As he's an audio and camera snob, the V10 fits the bill for him.

The V20 seems to be carrying the same ethos. Great audio performance paired with a camera that offers the user a wide array of options.

Exactly and a bonus if it just works in auto for the people who don't need such options. From what I've seen it should be great in auto and manual.

I've been hoping that an optical zoom would be offered on a phone, and I know it probably isn't possible due to size. The iPhone 7 Plus does somewhat fit that bill with the 2nd camera being telephoto.

What I'm disappointed in is LG took the opposite approach and uses the 2nd camera for an even wider shot. I have a Note 4 now.. I've never felt the need to have a wider wide angle shot. I frequently want a closer one, without degrading picture quality using digital zoom.

That seems odd, why would they go about it this way on the V20? Would this be a downgrade from the V10, for those who prefer to shoot in 16:9?

If you prefers 16:9 aspect ratio as I do the best benefit is that the picture fills the entirety of the screen without the need for black bars in the sides when viewing photos. Other than that I don't think there's a real downside. The focal length is probably different though and not sure how that will affect shots.

One thing I have noticed about the V10 camera is the lens window can scratch easily. I have managed to put "very" faint scratches on mine from gently wiping off the dust and debris. I think its the AR coating on the lens. You can buy replacements, but AFIAK many of the 3rd party parts are not AR coated... and they are hit / miss in that regard.

I am not sure how this compares to the V20, but with a camera glass window that large / protruding, I think its something V20 owners should be careful with.

That's unfortunate. I had my V10 early on within a few weeks of it launching with no case ever and never got any scratches on my lens. I don't think V20 owners will have anything to worry about. Most phones today come with protruding lenses so I don't think it will be a huge issue.

Despite black bars on the side, I prefer shooting in 4:3 aspect ratio. Much easier to order prints of photos I like without much cropping. And it'll match the 4:3 ratio of my FZ-35 super zoom. When I'm printing photos from both I won't have to worry about different crops.
