Any idea what might be wrong with my phone?

Hi, I have an S3 that just messed up and I'm trying to fix it but no luck, hoping someone on here might have some insight. I was texting and the screen just went black. The OS is still running, I can answer phone calls by swiping blindly lol, and can hear the sound it makes when you unlock the screen, just nothing showing on the screen. I took the battery out, replaced it, and rebooted it, it shows the Samsung logo clearly, then makes the booting up sounds- and is booting up, but never shows anything past the Samsung logo. I tried taking the battery, sim, and sd card out and waiting a few minutes to replace them. Tried holding the volume up/power/home buttons to reset- it shows the Samsung logo, and says 'recovery booting'(or something to that effect) and then the screen goes black. I tried letting go of the power button while still holding the volume and home button, didn't change anything. No water damage, minor drops but it's in a good case. I'm assuming it's an os problem, not a screen problem, because it shows the Samsung logo, but goes black when the os starts booting. Any thoughts? Thanks!

If you recently applied an OS update for your Galaxy S3, you may need to do a factory reset as there may be some conflicting files left over from the last android OS iteration.

However, if that method doesn't work, you may need to reflash your ROM via recovery.

Sounds like you (or some app you installed) changed your dpi setting, since you can see SOMETHING on the screen when you power it up, you can rule out damaged display or disconnected cable.

Thanks for the reply, I wondered about that because I did get an update a few weeks ago. I can't get into recovery though. I can get it to say 'recovery booting' but it won't show anything past that; just can't seem to get to the recovery screen. I held down the power/home/volume down and got a screen warning me about installing a custom os. I pressed volume down to cancel and restart the phone, still showed Samsung, then booted up black. Any other ways I might be able to get to the recovery screen?

i know you have tried several ways but sometimes when we get frutrated we forget the most simple matters in life.. have ya tried to press the power button and immedately releasiiing it.. if all else fails there is a program that can take ya back to base GS3 and from there get all the updates... i dont know where that program is right now but iit brought me outta a reboot loop problem where everything went black as it was booting.. sounds kinda like yer problem..

one more tid bit of news.. some may argue but if you ever once unlock the boot loader "Never Never" relock the boot.. it bricked me i figured but the program i foound fixed it asap

Gozirra- I did download a clock app a few days ago because the one I had on my home screen disappeared, I assumed I accidentally removed it. There were a multiple steps to set it up after install, and I never got around to setting it up. I thought I later removed it but I may not have. I wonder if that had anything to do with it.

the program will list all the updates possible and you can "right click odin and chose run as administrator" run that program in odin and wait wait wait.. it works.
